In East Prussia Soviet forces battled into the center of Koenigsberg, long besieged fortress capital of the Junkers province as German defense areas report a wide opening route to Berlin along the Vienna Linz line.
Observers believed Germany abandoned north defense as the last Dutch rail line fell trapping about 80 000 German troops. US paratroops were said to push into central Germany toward the First Army while Allied forces neared Bremen and Hanover and entered Dortmund Essen and Gelsenkirchen. Russians held most of Vienna and fought at the city center.
Allied forces push toward Berlin from the Netherlands and Ruhr, severing rail lines in western Holland and closing on Bremen and Hamburg. Ninth Army storms Essen, Dortmund, and Gelsenkirchen while Seventh Army nears Crailsheim and Munich region. Berlin looms 128 miles away as pockets of German troops hold in pockets near the Rhine and Weser lines.
Eastern front reports place Russian forces within sight of Aspern airport and near Schoenbrunn Park as they drive toward Vienna. Soviet units reportedly cross the Danube north and east of the city while other columns advance toward the Marchfeld. Red Air Force pounds Vienna and Breslau with extensive aerial bombardment.
Fifth Army troops advancing up the west coast close on Massa amid scattered resistance after cap d' era. Elements of the 442nd Regiment and the 2nd Negro Division push toward Porta Montignoso and Strinato. British destroyers provide fire support as Com MACCIO Lagoon area is mopped up. In the Pacific, Okinawa battles loom with heavy Japanese defense and new Cabinet moves in Tokyo. General MacArthur reports 6,495 more Japanese dead in the Philippines and heavy losses aboard ships.
General Omar Bradley's 12th Army Group has captured over a million Germans on the Western Front. Patton's Third Army leads with 418 501 prisoners while Hodges First Army totals 405 703 and Simpson Ninth Army 182 162 for a combined 1 1006 366. Gerow's 15th Army figure is not announced. Seventh Army under Devers has about 209 000.
An air armada of over 900 RAF heavies hit Hamburg Blohm Voss submarine yards and the Lutzekendorf oil plant near Leipzig while Mosquitos struck Berlin. Earlier, 1 950 U S Eighth Air Force planes bombed 11 targets from Berlin to Nuernberg. German losses included 192 destroyed planes in 24 hours and two days of heavy casualties totaling 32 bombers and four fighters.
Caracas reports the resumption of diplomatic ties with Argentina after a period of disruption. Both nations intend to reestablish full ambassadorial exchanges and collaboration across regional issues.

AUSTIN April 9. The House passed and sent to the Senate a bill outlawing the closed shop by a 67 to 64 final vote after a brief verification request. The measure aims to restrict labor organization practices.
The United States resumes normal diplomatic relations with Argentina, announced by Secretary of State Stettinius. The move aligns with 19 American republics from the Mexico City conference and follows Argentina’s declaration of war on Axis powers and adherence to conference resolutions.
The US Weather Bureau reports Amarillo area partly cloudy with little temp change and strong winds up to 40 mph today and tomorrow. West Texas sees partly cloudy and warmer conditions with El Paso Panhandle and South Plains cooler Tuesday. New Mexico forecasts partly cloudy to Tuesday with showers or flurries northwest and north central, cooler west of the Continental Divide. Highs 55 80, low 35 50 tonight. U P reports American troops discovered a vault beneath a German salt mine 2100 feet down containing more than 100 million dollars in gold bricks and foreign currency. Officials from the Reichsbank were arrested by the Gestapo after the find, with a Reichsbank official claiming the treasure is all Reichs bank gold.
Washington April 9 three of the six men in AP photographer Joe Rosenthal’s flag raising image on Mount Suribachi were killed in later Iwo Jima combat. Pfc. Rene A. Gagnon 20 of Manchester New Hampshire disclosed that only he and Pfc. Ira H Hayes 22 of Bapchule Arizona survived uninjured. The fallen were Sgt. Michael Strank of Conemaugh Pennsylvania Sgt. Henry O Hansen of Somerville Massachusetts and another whose name awaits next of kin notification.
