Reports from London Stockholm and Oslo describe a swift German invasion of Norway and Denmark with battles at sea and air over Oslo. Oslo and Copenhagen fall under German control as Oslo government withdraws to Hamar and Kristiansand is bombarded during a rapid occupation.
Dewitt Mackenzie argues the Norwegian minefield and subsequent Allied reaction mark the start of a broad European war. He warns neutrality is untenable as Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Romania, and likely Russia and Italy face exposure, with the United States urged to safeguard neutrality amid rising tensions.
President Roosevelt nominated Texas congressman Marvin Jones to the United States Court of Claims to fill the vacancy from Judge Thomas Williams's death. Jones, long a leading agriculture ally and former chair of the House Agriculture Committee, will serve for life with a $12 000 annual salary as he departs the House to join the court.
Prime Minister Chamberlain announced Britain and France would rush full aid to Norway as German forces opened a northern front with a blitzkrieg. He said Allied naval units are at sea and predicted Germany would be defeated, while noting German occupation of Denmark and swift actions around Oslo and other Norwegian ports.
