Washington April 65 United Press reports ongoing Senate finance committee delays boost the soldier bonus bill while work on the tax bill stalls. With weeks to the Republican convention, leaders fear a showdown next week and may force the Senate to choose between the two measures.
Liquor raiders target the fashionable Du Pont Circle area in Washington and arrest butler Thomas Raynor from Mrs. William Hitt’s home on liquor selling charges. The sweep adds to 125 total arrests across raids with hundreds of gallons seized and several stills recovered.
In San Antonio on April 5 Federal Judge Duval West sustained a motion to dismiss a bill of complaint filed by Hurley Chandler a Bexar County Negro. Chandler sought to restrain state officials and the county Democratic executive chairman from interfering with his alleged right of franchise in a controversy over the white man primary law.
Former U S Commission on Industrial Relations chairman Frank P. Walsh declared in New York on April 5 that Governor Al Smith should seek the Democratic presidential nomination and warned the party to wary of reactionaries within its ranks.
Chicago Windsor Colo won the national interscholastic basketball championship by defeating Yankton 25 to 6 in a decisive final. A separate Dallas area Klan violence incident involved the cremation of actor Russ Forth, his wife, and their four year old daughter after a cross burning.
Mrs. Eleanor V. Brewster, wife of Eugene V. Brewster, millionaire publisher, files suit in New York demanding $200000 from Corlis Palmer for alleged alienation of affections. She declares no divorce and cites Palmer’s 1920 plan to gain Brewster’s wealth, noting Palmer and Brewster’s names appeared in auction notices for fur coats and diamonds.
Houston April 5. Deserted by her husband, 17-year-old Mrs. J. R. Whittaker faced poverty and sought someone to take her month-old child. A half dozen women called at her boarding house as offers of work emerged. She hoped to regain the baby later when she earned money.
J. W. Garrow of Houston was chosen president of the Texas Cotton Association at the closing session of the state convention. Austin will host the 1925 convention. The new board includes R. L. Dixon of Dallas, D. C. Reed of Austin, W. T. Caswell of Austin, Theo Marcus of Dallas, Berney Anderson of Fort Worth, Bayliss Harriss of Galveston, L. P. Grenna of Dallas, and Joseph W. Evans of Houston.
Dallas April 5 Harold B Walker a candidate for lieutenant governor faced a charge of driving his automobile while intoxicated a policeman said he sped down the street and crashed into another car a woman in a second vehicle suffered a cut from shattered glass in the alleged incident আশ
R. C. Morgan a three year old boy son of G. W. Morgan from northwest of Amarillo underwent a minor operation after inserting a bean in his nostril during play. The bean had swelled and required anaesthesia for removal after arrival in Amarillo with his parents.
Victor David Brenner famed as V. D. B., designer of the Lincoln penny, died today in a New York hospital after a several months illness.
William Gibbs McAdoo arrives in Amarillo on Wednesday evening for a political rally at the municipal auditorium. The city plans a coordinated whistle welcome from railroads and factories and expects a large turnout, with officials urging business closures at 5 30 p m and a pre rally meeting for county chairmen in the Longhorn club rooms.
A reception committee is announced for Hon. William Gibbs McAdoo’s speech in Amarillo on Wednesday at 6 o’clock. Members from Canadian Higgins and Lipscomb areas include judges, lawyers, and local leaders. Continues on page nine.
Weather forecasters expect a cooler and unsettled Sunday following weeks of similar patterns. Government reports hint that true Amarillo conditions are not far off as the current unsettled weather remains widespread across the Middle West and Southwest.
Washington reports six witnesses expected next week in the oil inquiry to detail alleged convention time deals. They include W. L. Kistler of Tulsa Jake Smith of Paris Texas J F Baughn of Harlingen H W Ballard of Los Angeles Robert Wolfe of Columbus Ohio and J B French of Oklahoma City.
Atlantic City authorities arrested Mrs. Pearl Willard, daughter of a wealthy launderer, and John G. Gilles, ex New York detective, for the murder of the five months old baby of Harmond A. Willard who is missing. The infant’s body was found near the shore last December and identified a month later as Mrs. Willard’s child.
Seattle April 5 Major Frederick L. Martin and three companions will attempt tomorrow morning to begin the second leg of their round the world flight. Despite favorable weather today the aviators could not take off. In six trials Martin's plane failed to rise from the water.
Amarillo voters elected C Cotten, C Rogers, H J Crow, and J Ray to the school board. Warren and a late write in S D Vaughn trailed as ballots totaled 703 in a high turnout. Cotten led with 631 votes, Rogers 563, Crow 539, Ray 344, Warren 340, and Vaughn 168. Ballots counted around 10 pm after a day of afternoon voting.
Paul Rapkowski aged 21 confessed to stabbing 13 year old William Clifford Jr as he walked with his father on a Brooklyn street. He said he acted to create a little excitement and stood with folded arms as police recounted the incident.
N C Richards of Yakima was chosen by the Washington state Republican convention in Wenatchee to serve as national committeeman in session held today.
Dallas observes the death of Dr William M. Anderson known as the famous marrying parson. He passed away at his Dallas home late today.
A 1924 biographical sketch recalls Woodrow Wilson’s long clash with American journalism. It notes his contempt for sensationalism and his idealization of the London Times, plus a wary stance toward reporters during his presidency and campaign.
Mayfield Peddy senate investigation committee and associates clashed over election boxes. County clerk E M Pittman reports torn boxes sent to Washington are unusable, with only three returns and one stray. Potter county will need new boxes despite election fight publicity.
The Senate committee will call Howard Mannington, former tenant of the so called little green house, as a star witness next week. Mannington, brought from Europe, will be asked about liquor deals and political influence. John Goroni testified Mannington took a $4 cut on each bonded liquor case, sharing with Jess Smith and an unnamed man. Brookhart promises evidence in black and white that will surprise Mannington.
Lieut. Erynne Brown of the U S Navy pay corps vanished in Los Angeles. He is alleged to have taken $120,000 from navy funds, with $50,000 still missing. Intelligence bureau operatives pursue leads as reports place him in Seattle San Francisco or aboard a boat at sea.
Austin April 5 The attorney general ruled that residents outside cities of 10000 population or more need not obtain an exemption certificate to vote and that issuing such certificates is neither required nor authorized by law.
Great Bend April 5 John W Waldron former Methodist minister was sentenced to 5 to 21 years in the penitentiary after being found guilty on a statutory charge earlier in the week He furnished a 10000 appeal bond.
In Lilly Pennsylvania April 5 a clash between locals and Ku Klux Klan members left two men dead Phillip Conrad 25 and Floyd Paula 28 and many injured. The Klansmen carried regalia and fled by train after a hose was turned on them. Police reported several wounded with three Klansmen cited.
Vera Stone, 27, friend to police officials and underworld figures, was found dead in Los Angeles. Detectives sought two men known only as Bill and Jack, believed to explain a killing likened to the Alberta Meadows case now in court.
Washington April 5 Republicans of the Northwest clashed over the chances of a third party in the region. Rep Larsen of Minnesota responded to Governor Preus’s White House statement that La Follette could sweep the Northwest, saying Preus imagines Magnus Johnson is still chasing him.
In Panhandle Texas the city elected C. B. Deahl mayor. Aldermen chosen were E. J. Lewis W. P. Stephen E. C. Nickell R. W. Lane and T. B. Ramey. School trustees named were Abbery A. Callaghan C. B. E. McCray J. M. Sanford and C. A. Hawkins.
Three rum running vessels captured at Galveston were ordered sold at auction by Federal Judge J C Hutcheson Jr in Houston. A fourth vessel, the British steamer Muriel HE Winters, is held pending ownership dispute.
