War Drives Fishermen to Inland Ponds
War time curtailment of marine fishing boosts interest in fish farms as artificial ponds form on useless land. Oklahoma created 2,434 ponds in early 1944, with fertilizer boosting yields to as much as 300 pounds per acre versus 7 to 150 from natural ponds. Continuous pond operation relies on predator and non predatory fish in planned ratios along with fertilizer and careful fishing. Ponds avoid flood prone areas and can supply water for livestock and flood control while aiding game preservation.
