The Army will cut 14 air defense battalions and one armored division as part of a Defense Department economy drive. Overall manpower to shrink by 100,000 by June next year, with 71,000 by January 1 and 29,000 by June 30.

Rep. Brooks Hays appeals to President Eisenhower to federalize no more troops and replace the 101st Airborne with National Guardsmen at Central High School. He calls for removing all troops at the earliest moment to restore calm and ease federal state tension amid integration crisis.
Gov. Orval Faubus prepared to summon a historic Arkansas Legislature session aimed at ending troop enforced integration at Central High School. The Arkansas Democrat reported the call was expected within hours, with convening likely by midweek after Faubus spent the night in Fayetteville.
Sen Ralph Yarborough was named chairman of the Senate Civil Service subcommittee, influential over federal employees. The panel will review legislation on health and life insurance, merit promotions, and other federal worker matters.

Three enlisted men from the 101st Airborne Division were detained by North Little Rock police while en route to racial integration duties at Central High School. The Army said they had been drinking, suspected absent without leave, and handed to military police for investigation with no charges yet filed.
West German army officers expressed near revolt over Defense Minister Franz Josef Strauss after Brig. Gen. Bernhardt Mueller Hillebrand was dismissed as military personnel chief. He left his clothes to brother Paul age 7 and his toys to brother Jeff age 4. His 25 cents was to be split between his mother and father. His mother revealed he was not an influenza victim after he asked how to spell will.
William A. Lee of Chicago, a 42-year Teamsters member and Chicago Federation of Labor president, joins Hoffa and three others as candidates for the general presidency at the union convention in Miami Beach. Hoffa, 44, seeks a first ballot victory amid corruption charges as delegates near the convention opening. Other contenders include Thomas L. Hickey of New York Thomas J. Haggerty of Chicago and Rep. John Shelley of California.

El Paso September 2997 A Governor Price Daniel urged a calmer cleaner attitude to integration, saying troops and bayonets would not be needed. He predicted a united Democratic front by the next election and urged local solutions over outside agitators during a 30 hour visit with El Paso leaders.
Navy jet fighter pilot Lt. Robert J. Rutledge bailed out off Catalina Island. Parachute seen, water contact reported. Fog hindered searches by carrier, destroyers, Coast Guard cutters, seaplane tender and air units. Rutledge’s mother Mrs. W H Rutledge from Littlefield Texas listed.
