Admiral Nimitz announced American Marines landed on two more Palau islands Ngesebus and Kongaur, securing a 4,800 foot fighter airstrip north of Peleliu. U.S. forces mop up on the other island as survivors of the Hina landings are accounted for.
CHUNGKING Sept 29 leaders here fear Chinese support for land campaigns has faded. Japanese successes lengthen the war, reduce Chinese Army effectiveness, and threaten forward air bases. US 14th Air Force losses and need to regroup at Kunming complicate supply and training, while Chinese Communist autonomy grows amid lend lease tensions. Naval air strikes report 17 small Japanese ships sunk and a broad Pacific raid picture.
Swiss dispatch reported by OWI that German forces prepared evacuation of Turin and Piedmont and began destroying public buildings factories and airfields. Aeronautica Italiana hangars dynamited airfields ploughed up. SPA factory producing tanks and heavy trucks blown up after equipment moved to Germany. Turin appears completely abandoned.

Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force reports Field Marshal Montgomery praised the First British Airborne Division for its conduct at Arnhem. The Office of Price Administration launched a wide legal offensive against 172 slaughterers and meat handlers across Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Actions target upgrading meat to higher classes, boosting profits by 16 to 20 dollars per beef side and adding 3 to 4 cents per pound for consumers. Departments report coordinated filings across Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Lubbock, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Shreveport, New Orleans, Kansas City, and St. Louis as part of a bid to curb black market activity before winter.
