James A. Stillman failed to secure a divorce from Mrs Anne Stillman and was found to be the father of Guy Stillman. The referee upheld Mrs Stillman's claim that Stillman lived with Florence Leeds and acknowledged two children with her. Guy Stillman remains eligible for the family trusts totaling about 33 million.
At Aqueduct a two year old filly Linaito owned by James B. Smith bolted to the barrier and died after being impaled on a picket as she tried to flee the fence. Jockey Earle Sande was uninjured. Linaito had been a two to one favorite in a six furlong race though the Jockey Club ruled wagers binding since the horse officially started after weigh in.
A 4 PM gas explosion at Masterson No 3 gasser left two men badly burned. L B Sweeney jumped into a tank of boiling water to save himself, while Per ry Andree tore away his clothing to lessen the burns. Both men were rushed to St Anthony’s hospital with severe scalds and burns, the rig a total loss.
Marion Illinois September 29 The state is ready to go to trial next week in the cases of 74 men indicted over the Herrin mine killings last June States Attorney Delos Duty said the trials were set for November 12 but defense asked for postponement until January Judge Hartwell fixed November 13 as a compromise.
Former Alfred E. Smith was nominated for governor at the Democratic state convention in Syracuse. The event crowned Smith as the party’s candidate for the New York governorship.
St John Neb Sept 29 The Canadian Pacific Railway steamer Empress en route from St John to Digby NB went ashore near Mispee NB in the Bay of Fundy. The ship carried passengers and early reports gave no clear word on casualties.
Texarkana Sept 29 Mrs Susie Hicks 62 was sentenced to five years in the Texas Penitentiary on an accomplice to murder charge in the Cass County district court at Linden. The victim was Sam Griffinson, husband of Hicks, murdered June 13, 1921. Kingston, convicted last October, received six years in the same case. Hicks later married Kingston after Griffinson's death and she faces further trial on an accomplice charge.
Gertrude Patterson, found unconscious near the Low ery-Phillips school, spoke to officials claiming she leapt from a car while her mother Mrs. F. M. Patterson and brother were passengers. She said she wanted a doctor, had chest pain, and that her family intended to take her to a physician before driving away toward Amarillo. Gertrude remains in St Anthony's sanitarium as relatives promise support.
Johnston City Illinois Sept 29 Five men, three mine surveyors and two miners were killed and three miners were injured slightly in an explosion at Take Creek Mine, one and one half miles northeast of Johnston City. Names listed include surveyors Paul Best Collinsville Al Lee Bailey Collinsville Ill Harry Shaw Collinsville Ill Marcus Klavatich Johnston City Ill Pete Castrela Johnston City Ill. Injured James Gower and Ed Jenkins were slightly overcome by gas. a third injured worker could not be learned. About 350 men worked in the mine when the blast occurred. seven miners including the injured were briefly imprisoned before rescue teams removed them. Officials believe the blast occurred as surveyors entered a gas pocket with burning lamps.
Washington report quotes Hong Kong Telegraph on Sun Yat Sen and a supposed China Germany Moscow alliance. The German embassy queried Berlin and the foreign office replied that Germany never considered any triple alliance.
Attachment of funds in four New York banks to Hugo Stinnes in a breach of contract suit by James A. Tillman shows Stinnes pursued large U.S. loans through various schemes. The funds were held by National City Bank Guaranty Trust Equitable Trust and Holleson and Company under an order by Justice Wasservogel. Tillman alleged a May 1919 agreement to develop U.S. trade, with Stinnes to post collateral for a $125,000,000 loan to buy American raw materials.
Five girl students and ten teachers narrowly escaped as the girls dormitory at Lincoln Coplah Agricultural School burned down today. All personal effects were lost and the property damage is estimated at 100000 dollars.
The Mission Oil Company and the Amarillo Oil Company merged creating a new firm with $3,000,000 capital stock. Plans include a gas pipeline near the city for industrial use, though it will not enter the city. Three Mission and three Amarillo directors will elect a seventh. Pipeline construction will start once financing is secured.
Special to The News Panhandle reports fair committee objections to the Ku Klux Klan using fair grounds for a parade. In response, 137 Klansmen marched along the main street of Panhandle at night, drawing a fairly large crowd away from the grounds.
Sept 29 Cold tension between British and Turkish nationalists with a hostile note from Mustapha Kemal Pasha to Brigadier General Harrington seen as blocking any pacific settlement of the straits. Paris reports the abdication fate of Mohammed VI unsettled though a cousin may be chosen. dispatches in Angora claim abdication but lack confirmation.
London reports that Britain and Turkey have not concluded peace since 1918 and war declaration would be unnecessary. The two nations remain governed by the 1918 armistice terms.
New Bedford reports General John J. Pershing will write his World War memoirs on Naushen Island in Buzzard's Bay owned by W. Cameron Forbes of Boston. In Tacoma Washington fifty thousand pelts mainly from Alaska and Siberia sold at auction for 150000 dollars attracting buyers from across the country and one from Germany.
New York's Gertrude Ederle, 15, star of the Women's Swimming Association, equalled the world record for 150 yards in a special Brighton Beach pool race but did not lower the women's marks for 200 and 220 yards.
Syracuse voters heard Alf A. Smith of New York City chosen as governor and George Lunn of Schenectady named lieutenant governor. The Democratic state convention unanimously elected both to their posts.
Harry Krohn of Aiken decisively outpointed George Shade of California in a 12 round middleweight showdown in Akron. Newspaper men noted Shade failed to land a dozen clean blows.
In New York on September 29 Murray Levin, driven by refused marriage proposals, shot Nina Tignan at the chorus girl's apartment and then shot himself, wounding her seriously. The attacker died.
Austin Granville, Chicago newspaper man and author of If the Devil came to Chicago, died at his home. He graduated from Oxford University in 1875 and was a long time member of the Press Club of Chicago, serving forty years.
Clifford Henry, a self supporting student from Corpus Christi, trekked nine hundred miles on foot to enter Canyon State Normal College. He arrived in time for football practice, earning letters in football and basketball over two years while supporting himself during college.
A St Louis warrant charges garage owner Harry Brenn with burning Celeste Schneider’s body to claim life insurance. Brenn vanished. authorities say the grave was robbed and he may have staged his death to desert his wife. Ruth Knudson and Clifford Harrison in Michigan pled guilty to disinterring Mrs Fairchild’s body in a 1919 plot to claim insurance.
A morning blaze in a five story building at 41 West 109th Street left several residents dead. Flames erupted from windows hindering entry as ladders were used from the street. Four bodies were removed from the upper floor and three firemen reached that level.
