Gen A A Vandegrift told the House naval committee Marines should form a 100000 man postwar force with 9200 officers to be ready to rapid strike to avert world peace disruption. He envisions aviation roles, eight escort carriers, and amphibious landings as core duties within a UN framework.
Panhandle residents faced showers and cooler air as Amarillo measured 1.96 inches of rain since Thursday, with lighter totals in western areas. Forecasters expect warmer temps and continued cloudiness, while wheat fields gain moisture but risk crusting from upcoming sun.
Reports from Mrs. John Coburn near Lake Fryer describe Wolf Creek flooding as bridges washed out over several miles. Eight inches of rain fell in one hour on the J T Trew ranch, damaging grassland and washing a moving lake across the plains while Lake Fryer rose several feet. Nearby a Keith McLain ranch house was washed away as Ochiltree County’s North Plains region received at least three inches of rain since Thursday.

Gen. George S. Patton Jr reported personally to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower on Bavaria denazification at a two hour and 20 minute Frankfurt conference. Eisenhower said there was nothing unusual about meeting with Patton and dismissed rumors of possible relief as gossip.

SAN FRANCISCO September 28. Dr Eugene Staley of the Institute of Pacific Relations quoted scientists at a Chicago conference as saying no defense exists against atomic bombs and nations may learn to produce them in 2 to 10 years. He warned unknown enemies could drop bombs and that oceans and naval power offer little protection. The group urged a strong international organization to avert total war and warned against a drift to tyranny.
All India radio reported the French colonial administration in Saigon announced that the occupation was completed and that the French government was already functioning there.
The Weather Bureau reports Saturday and Saturday night in Amarillo and vicinity partly cloudy and warmer. West Texas stays cloudy and cold with occasional rain and a northward track. Temperatures yesterday ranged around the mid thirties with a peak near 36 and a low near 33. Precipitation for the 24 hours ending 4 PM was 1.96 inches. Sunrise was 7 40 AM and sunset 7 34 PM.
Allied command launches a two fold plan to repatriate 1 190 000 Pacific veterans within seven months and to supply Japan with essential civilian goods while withholding luxury shipments. MacArthur authorizes raw materials for critical needs and sets priorities for ships to deliver food and materials. Seventy four Japanese officers and men will be arrested for the Palawan massacre of 200 war prisoners in 1944. Shipping for troop repatriation will start at 120 000 in October and rise to 286 000 by April as divisions depart from Yokohama and the Philippines.
The textile workers strike expanded to 284 plants, lifting the nationwide tally of those out of work to 412,777. Indirectly, about 1.5 million office and shop workers were affected by the New York building maintenance strike. Moslems prayed at mosques without incident while police guarded sites. a fire gutted the Gir Suam mosque and a trustee spoke of Hindu friends helping the poor.
