Dr Berthold Schulz of Chicago parked his British jeep outside the Kremlin, then entered the National Hotel and told Soviet officials he planned to drive through the Soviet Union to Iran or Czechoslovakia. He had driven from Helsinki, becoming the first foreign tourist since 1917 to do so.
Lr Schulz, a 42 year old Chicago dentist, obtained a Soviet visa and embarked on a solo drive across the Soviet Union in a cream colored Land Rover. He faced puzzled Soviet tourist officials and Finnish border checks as he described his long, difficult journeys and hopes to drive freely within the USSR.
Henry Ringling North and his brother John Ringling North, major owners of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, visit Texarkana on the eve of the troupe’s Texas tour. The Greatest Show on Earth performs at the Tri State Fairgrounds next Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. The brothers are heirs to the Ringling circus empire.
Brazos River near Seymour rose to 20.20 feet at 10:30 p m approaching the 21 foot 1906 record as of late Tuesday night. Farmers along the river suffered heavy damage with 25 to 30 cattle lost near Seymour and cattle losses estimated around 10000 dollars for rancher Bruce Campbell. Several 100 acre cotton fields were washed out near Knox City between Seymour and Knox City. Harvest was just beginning in the area.

Leo Durocher bid farewell to baseball after 30 years and joined NBC as an executive reportedly earning 52000 dollars a year. He resigned Saturday as manager of the New York Giants, a post paying about 60000 a year, and NBC introduced him as a quiet conservative network executive.
