Prague reports Hitler’s demand for Sudeten lands as Britain mobilizes its navy. Czechoslovakia braces for possible air raids and gas drill drills while Masaryk rejects German terms. Government enacts rationing and defense measures as the crisis deepens.
London reports a sweeping precautionary mobilization as Britain marshals the navy including possible use of Empress of Australia and Queen Mary as transports. Royal fleet reservists recalled. King George to issue a proclamation, while Berlin and London dispute deadlines amid Sudetenland pressure.
Hundreds of Legion members continued to pour into Amarillo after the Los Angeles convention. The Vicksburg Sons of Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, with 43 members, arrived by bus around 9 pm and were given coffee and doughnuts at a Hanson Post stand in front of Cal Farley’s service station on Fourth and Fillmore streets.
President Roosevelt issues a new telegram to Chancellor Hitler warning that the fate of the world rests on his response. He urges continued negotiations as the sole path to a lasting settlement and says history will judge all who risk war. The message follows Hitler’s response to the Versailles era critique.
Rome reports indicated Italy began calling specialists from ten reserve classes to prepare for general mobilization. About 2,000,000 more men could be drawn, with 1906 to 1916 births affected. Leaves canceled and passports denied to draft targets, though mobilization denied as a precaution.
The Belgian army advanced 23 miles from Dixmude to Ploegsteert capturing Poelcapelle and forcing 5000 enemy prisoners from Houthulst Forest. French forces seized Fort Malmaison near Laon. Haig’s troops captured 5000 prisoners and 200 guns. Champagne operations continued with Americans reaching Exermont. Allenby claimed 5000 more Turkish prisoners in Palestine. Bulgarian armistice request was refused and surrender demanded.
Adolf Hitler rejected Roosevelt's plea for peace in Europe saying the Sudeten settlement is exhausted and only the Czech government can decide peace or war. Washington tracked the crisis as two US warships sailed for European waters and Cabinet met to discuss implications. Senator Borah urged return of German and Hungarian majority areas while Senator Logan called for repealing the neutrality act to aid Britain and France. The state department warned Americans to avoid European travel unless absolutely necessary.
German government quarters in Berlin say Czechoslovakia's rejection of Hitler s surrender demands shows Prague is theoretically ready for agreement but unwilling to keep promises. Jan Masaryk in London announced Czechoslovakia s reply, calling the demands absolute.
Police said a 15 year old Amarillo boy confessed to the kidnapping and burglary of a local home on September 9 in which guns were taken. He and two accomplices forced Jack Mahoney to drive, bound him, and left him near the KGNC transmitter before he freed himself. The case goes to the grand jury for further action.
Clovis hosts a four day Bi State Fair beginning Wednesday with three new fair buildings completed. The Silver State Shows carnival arrives for a week run and the pageant Progress of the Plains plus daily rodeo and livestock displays highlight the event. Twelve communities have entered booths in community exhibits.
President Roosevelt formed a three member emergency fact finding board to investigate the wage dispute threatening a nationwide railroad strike. Chief Justice Walter P. Stacy will chair the panel with Harry A. Millis and James M. Landis as members. The action delays the strike for at least 60 days and reflects Roosevelt’s long standing use of mediators.
Justice Walker Park Er Stacy of the North Carolina Supreme Court, a 53 year old known arbitrator, is appointed chairman of the fact finding commission to investigate the railroad wage dispute. Presidents Coolidge and Hoover are noted in the report.
In San Antonio on September 27 officers and deputies excavated a 17 foot high sand dune near Ingleside for nine hours seeking a woman's body. Clifford Wheeler, an African American man, claimed Joe D. Ball forced him to help bury the nude victim after a shooting tied to Minnie Gehardt, missing for 18 months. The sand kept caving and a deeper dig was postponed to the next day.
In Dallas a district court jury found Ted Walters, linked with Floyd Hamilton in a recent manhunt, guilty of a $15 station holdup. Walters received a 25 year prison term, while Hamilton had already been sentenced to 25 years for robbery with firearms. prosecutors indicated seeking a heavier term for Walters.
Great Britain’s Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain urged the empire to prepare for war if needed as a state of emergency was declared. Hitler remained silent in Berlin while Britain readied troops, police, and air raid precautions amid stalled talks. The Commons and Lords were set to meet for a joint session while Chamberlain reported on his talks with Germany.

Berlin papers blame Czech leaders for Europe’s fate as Hitler’s regime vows resolve. Oklahoma Senator Josh Lee says Legion blocks his wealth conscription bill and will push again. Stephen F. Albuquerque dispatch reports New Mexico Republicans, at the state convention, adopt a platform backing a maximum old age pension and direct primary. Albert Mitchell is still deemed unavailable for governor as leaders push toward a November ticket.
