Flames burst from a deep canyon with firelines along a ridge driving about 300 residents from two mountain resort communities near San Bernardino. Fire crews fought the blaze as winds pushed the flames toward the towns and prompted evacuations.
A fierce typhoon capsized a ferry near Hokkaido and sank four other Japanese vessels. Hundreds drowned and 59 Americans were reported missing. The disaster also forced evacuation of over 300 people from Cedar Pines and Job's Peak as flames threatened cabins and summer homes.
Baltimore attorney James T. Roberts called police to surrender on a warrant charging kidnapping and premeditated murder in the Miami slaying of his 6 year old daughter Judith Ann. A grand jury indictment was announced by Florida prosecutor George Brautigam, with three Baltimore area arrests anticipated.
