Washington September 26 AP Lewis W Douglas resigned as ambassador to Britain and President Truman accepted with regret. He cited personal reasons including health after World War I gas exposure and a year hearing loss risk from a fishing accident. Douglas served three and a half years amid world events and earlier held government posts. Navy plans to call 4000 to 5000 reservists gradually to support fleet growth and aviation.
Britain signals a new peace initiative by proposing a United Nations backed resolution for Korea. The plan calls for an independent united Korea, continued UN aid to repel aggression, a democratic government elected under UN auspices, and a strong UN commission to enforce the terms. A crossing of the 38th parallel remains a military, not diplomatic, issue.
