More than 500 fishermen and families attended the Panhandle Outdoor Sports Club event in Thompson Park. Alex W. Meier defended his world championship in a fish skinning contest with a time of 101.9 seconds for five fish. Houston Doughty placed second in 138.3 seconds, and W R Birchfield of Amarillo took third at 256.9 seconds. The program ended with remarks by Mayor Lawrence Hagy and a reception after the contest sponsored by local businesses.

Firewreck at Amarillo Cannon Gasoline plant shocks city
An explosion at 11 p m Thursday wrecked the Cannon Gasoline Company plant on the Dumas highway four miles north of Amarillo. Firemen from two companies battled flames in about an hour. No injuries were reported. The refinery, built in 1929, is a gas and propane fuel producer. B F Riggs, secretary treasurer, was on duty. he was away on vacation when the blast occurred. Ownership recently changed as J J Hastings and Frank J Storm sold interests to John Farrell and an associate.
