A light turnout is expected for the 1 percent city sales tax referendum today. Absentee ballots totaled 284 as of Aug. 12, with polling stations opening at 7 AM and closing at 7 PM. Precinct locations include local schools and public buildings within city limits.
Investigations opened after a U.S. Air Force F4 and an Air Vietnam DC4 collided near Da Nang during landing, killing 75 aboard and two on the ground. Two Americans escaped injury while one parachuted to safety and the damaged jet landed at the airfield. Passengers and survivors are described, with a 12 year old in hospital and a man listed in critical condition.
The Texas Water Development Board approves a 2.1 million project to enlarge Black Burn Crossing dam on Lake Palestine and accepts a 430 thousand dollar additional storage share from Upper Nueches River Municipal Water Authority increasing state ownership to 53.63 percent. The board also notes that failure of a constitutional amendment will force new priority setting on prior commitments.
A Sunday morning crash at Amarillo Boulevard and Mirror killed 17 year old Lockney girl Janie Sandy Flores and injured 18 year old Plainview man Victor Ramos. Flores died of head injuries after the westbound car split in half and struck a light pole near St Anthony's Hospital. Ramos, the presumed driver, was listed in satisfactory condition at the same hospital. The rear section of the wrecked vehicle struck a second car driven by 18 year old Mark Alle Jones of 91 North Maryland.
Despite Nixon's 33 billion spending cut push, the House moved toward a massive Capitol expansion and repair program. If Senate approval follows, the project costs reach at least 180 million, plus a 100 million library that may become an additional House office building.
Pvt Stephen E. Melson 18 of Millsboro Delaware died in a Charleston hospital after alleging a drill instructor beat him at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. An autopsy was requested as the investigation continues with the instructor removed from duties. Melson enlisted Sept 2 and had been at the base five days before hospitalization.
The Nixon administration's postal corporation plan appears headed for defeat in the House Post Office Committee on Tuesday. A two-step vote would permit reviving the plan later while maintaining options for a labor-backed compromise and giving postmaster general and unions more time to negotiate.
A Mexican Airlines jet carrying U S tourists from Chicago crashed and split during landing in Mexico City. Officials fear at least 20 dead and up to 60 injured as rescue workers comb the wreckage.
U S command ordered its heaviest strike in four months against North Vietnamese bases near the DMZ. In seven strikes over 24 hours, about 1 000 tons of bombs were dropped from 35 B 52s north of the Rockpile as U S casualties rose from recent fighting.
Gen. Creigh ton W. Abrams, U.S. commander in Vietnam, could testify for the defense as six Green Berets face murder charges in Saigon. A decision on Abrams appearance is not confirmed, but reports say a subpoena is a strong possibility. Attorneys for both sides file into a case viewed as a power struggle between Special Forces and regular Army officers.
Senator John Tower predicts the Senate will restore part of the House cut to the oil depletion allowance from 27 percent toward 20 percent. He said the cuts do not reflect President Nixon’s views and expects the Senate to add about three percentage points back, while the drilling costs tax writeoff remains unchanged.
Mrs. Mars Bruce of Spearman keeps about 800 parakeets and canaries, raises them since 1949, and funds their care with roughly 150 dollars monthly. Her eight cages fill a wooden building in the backyard, while a large tomcat tolerates the birds.
