Transient Dies In Road Crash Near Amarillo
Edward Charles Gillette, 41, a transient, was fatally struck on Highway 5 between Amarillo and Washburn by a car driven by Charles W. Stewart, the county clerk at Claude. Gillette died after reaching Northwest Texas Hospital with chest injuries and a possible punctured lung. He could not identify himself or his destination and claimed no relatives. A Navy discharge in his pocket shows service as coxswain on the U S S Beaver from 1917 to 1919. birth date is February 23, 1897 in San Francisco. Investigators note the accident occurred as Stewart headed to Claude from Amarillo.
