Wertz Dies Noted Oil Leader From Amarillo Area
Ralph E. Wertz, 71, former president of Amarillo Gas Company and West Texas Gas Company, died suddenly in Boston from a heart ailment. A Panhandle booster, he helped expand oil and gas fields toward Amarillo, oversaw test wells, and led regional gas development. He had lived in Amarillo since 1931 after moving from Independence Kansas. His home was 1025 West Thirty third. He chaired the American Gas Association natural gas department and previously served as VP for Producers and Refiners Corporation. His wife accompanied him. he had been en route to consult a heart specialist.

Brothers Indicted in Driverless Car Crash
William Skeeter Haggerton aged 17 and his brother Charles Haggerton Jr were indicted by the Potter County grand jury for felony car theft linked to a driverless car that crashed into J. C. Oliver’s home at 1800 Crockett on the night of June 20. The parents of both youths now live in California. District Attorney Lloyd King said extradition machinery is in motion. Continued on Page 2.

Pre Medical Aptitude Tests Sought By Panhandle Students
In Canyon on Sept 20 pre medical students from the Panhandle and North Plains are urged to contact Dr. C A Pierle at West Texas State College to register for the fall medical aptitude tests. Registration must be in his office by Oct 10 and the tests will be held Oct 28. Although not required by medical schools, many request applicants to take the tests.
