Thousands packed the fairgrounds for opening day as the Midway overflowed with visitors and the Coliseum drew 5 000 for the Holiday on Ice show. Shamrock High School bands and 30 musical groups led a grand parade down Polk Street with shamrock majorettes and decorated floats.
Canadian High School senior John Rowntree Jr painted Texas on his suitcase and hitchhiked home from Idaho. Every Texas car stopped to discuss the word and one driver eventually ferried him to Amarillo. A warning follows for non Texans using the state name to get rides.
A young reader recalls Hi De Ho jockeys using gutted mufflers and cut outs to create noisy roars. Experts note that packed mufflers can mute sounds within the law while police in Albuquerque enforce warnings and $15 fines for violations. Amarillo residents report morning car noise from nearby airmen, highlighting the clash between quiet engine advances and disruptive street roars.

An Amarillo youth died and another was critically injured last night after a car skidded 24 feet and overturned 11 times on U.S. Highway 66 west of the Helium plant. Frank Alex Parrish, 23, of 1814 Maple, died on arrival at Northwest Texas Hospital. Carl Ray McNeal, 22, of 817 Carolina Street, was listed in critical condition. State highway patrolmen said the youths were racing.
The Holiday on Ice tenth anniversary gala opened at the Tri-State Fair Coliseum with 4500 spectators. Jinx Clark, formerly of Amarillo, stars in The Merry Widow number while designers highlight Gay Nineties costumes and a sparkling waltz finale.
Baseball scores show Pampa 10, Amarillo 7 to take the series 4-1. In the American League Detroit shuts out Kansas City 4-0 while New York at Washington is postponed by hurricane. In the National League St Louis beats Chicago 6-5 in the only game scheduled.
In Buenos Aires on September 19, a military rebellion toppled Juan Domingo Peron after a week of unrest. A three man junta announced resignation of all superior authority and began peace talks with rebels aboard the cruiser La Argentina. Crowds celebrated in the streets as loyal forces manned positions near Government House.
The Pampa Oilers clinched the West Texas New Mexico League title by beating the Gold Sox 10-7, aided by two Amarillo errors in the eighth that produced five runs. Pampa advances to the Little Dixie Series against Corpus Christi, with Rena Vega to pitch the opener. Red Dial selected by Pampa.
Hurricane Iane edged into Virginia after plundering eastern North Carolina leaving at least four dead and millions in damages. The storm’s slow advance caused abnormally high tides and widespread destruction along the coast.
The Norfolk weather bureau reports the storm center 30 miles south and moving north northeast at 10 mph, expected near Hampton Roads by early Tuesday. Tides rise to about four feet above normal by midnight, with 59 mph winds likely increasing. New Bern and Morehead City suffer severe damage and at least four deaths are reported in New Bern, while lines and roads are torn up across the region.
MEXICO CITY Sept. 19 A state of emergency was ordered in Tampico as the army could requisition food shelter and transport for 12,000 homeless. Gov Horacio Teran of Tamaulipas said two thirds of the port city of 110,000 were damaged and power water and communications were out. He gave conflicting death tolls from earlier reports, noting some deaths but not yet confirmed.
In Hong Kong on Tuesday the eighth and ninth Americans freed by the Communists since Friday crossed the border from Red China on sabotage charges. Miss Sarah Perkins aged 63 of Georgia with New York ties and Miss Dorothy Middleton formerly Cicero Illinois and adopted daughter of Lakeland Florida residents are Presbyterian missionaries. Also, Hart High School freshman Jimmy Johnson was killed and classmate Charles Roland injured when a car and tractor collided seven miles west of Hart during a hay ride. Hart schools will be closed for funeral services.
Senator Mansfield challenges Secretary Benson to reveal his very specific farm plan immediately and urges Senate and House Agriculture Committees to begin hearings. He calls the farm income crisis urgent and says Congress must be ready for prompt action.
Daily readings show Amarillo had sun on 245 of 263 days in 1955. At 3 p.m. yesterday wind and visibility were noted as partly cloudy across Houston Dallas Oklahoma City and Amarillo with varying mph and visibility figures.
Secretary of Commerce Weeks testified that a proposed government transport plan would strengthen national defense and offer cheaper service, while defending continued regulation of railroads and the Interstate Commerce Commission. He led off a hearing to outline the committee report and pave the way for later legislation.
