Allied spearheads push through the Siegfried line toward the Rhineland as civilians in the Cologne Aachen area defy Nazi evacuation orders. The test of Nazi authority shows widespread passive disobedience with about two million Germans expected to evacuate.

President Roosevelt ordered an emergency mediation board to investigate the labor dispute between 600 trainmen and the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee and Aurora and Chicago railroads. The presidential proclamation automatically freezes the strike action for 30 days affecting about 75,000 workers in the Chicago area.
