Reported unofficially weeks ago, Lily lies on a pond as hundreds of buoyancy cans with hexagonal faces connect to form a flexible yet rigid sea surface. Able to support aircraft, a six foot by 30 inch can design landed 9,000 pound loads on a 520 by 60 foot test strip, with 40 men assembling or disassembling the structure at sea.
Admiralty named R. M. Hamilton a naval inventor behind Lily a craft designed to ride 36 foot waves with a flat deck. The system builds on the Swiss Roll floating pier first used at Normandy and can be rolled up on ships then deployed from ship to shore.
Secretary Schwellenbach, given new authority to resolve labor disputes, appoints Edgar S. Warren to head a revamped conciliation unit. Warren will assume War Labor Board duties under Labor Department control and focus on the Detroit strike at Kelsey-Hayes and Ford, affecting 50,000 workers.
President Truman announced a reshuffle naming Robert P. Patterson as Secretary of War and Senator Harold H. Burton to the Supreme Court. He did not immediately accept resignations of John J. McCloy and Robert A. Lovett. Patterson becomes War chief from undersecretary, succeeding Henry L. Stimson who resigned reluctantly. Burton’s court appointment surprised many, with Patterson widely expected for court. The president also appointed W. Stuart Symington as administrator to replace the three man surplus-property board.
Peace officers from Texas Oklahoma and Kansas will convene tomorrow at Lake Fryer near Perryton for a program and barbecue. Col Homer Garrison and E A Gormley are on the program with attendance by Amarillo officials led by Sheriff Bill Adams Chief Sid Harper and others. The barbecue begins at 5 p m and the program starts at 1 p.m.
Tokyo's Asahi newspaper suspended for two days after mocking U S orders to print atrocity stories. MacArthur grants partial air-transport restoration as occupation steams ahead with Yoshida named foreign minister and Tojo-era war cabinet members still facing charges.
The government ends wartime limits on new construction including houses effective Oct. 15. Reconversion Director John W. Snyder unveils a six point plan to boost housing, expand supply, and curb inflation while easing price controls on materials and encouraging loans and private builders.
Washington faces wartime hangovers as Congress acts on enlistment incentives while considering trials for Emperor Hirohito. Senate debates unemployment pay extensions, veteran job rights, and civilian aid as Patterson moves to civilian goods reductions. Senate estimates 17,000 doctors to discharge from the Army by Jan. 1 and about 1,700 from the Navy.
Port Arthur reports motorists store gasoline in drums and tubs as union workers at Gulf Oil and Texas Company vote to strike for wage hikes and concessions. A R Kintsley of Fort Worth CIO union says a 6 p.m. deadline prompts refineries to meet demands or risk shutdowns with some pipelines already closing.
Harold A. Wright was elected to fill the vacancy on the Pampa city commission after Tom Cox resigned. Wright will take the oath tonight, defeating Marshall Hubbard in the special election. Pampa operates a three member commission with Farris Oden serving as mayor.
The weather bulletin notes mostly cloudy and colder conditions for Amarillo and vicinity with strong northerly winds and blowing dust. West Texas sees partly cloudy days through Thursday with cooler Panhandle and South Plains, rising afternoon temperatures into the high eighties and mid fifties nights, and a chance of scattered showers Thursday afternoon and night.
Pfc. H. T. Wright 30 of Corpus Christi becomes the first 131st Field Artillery member to reach San Antonio from the Lost Battalion. He spent over three and a half years in Japanese prison camps in Burma Java and Thailand. Major Huddleston W. Wright of Lubbock is also en route. Both to be processed at Fort Sam Houston for a furlough the first since 1941.
Tokyo reports Premier Higashi Kuni says Japan considers forming a committee to determine responsibility for starting the war and would try accused Japanese if General MacArthur approves. He says the emperor is not a war criminal, claims militarists misled him, and notes cabinet and imperial staff decide such matters. He denies ordering executions of Doolittle flyers.
The cabinet dined with President Truman in the White House living quarters today suggesting informal luncheons may become a regular affair. The report notes the social nature of the gathering and its informal setting. Olver & Wiggins Lumber Co. advertises No. 1 Red Cedar Shingles at 7.60 per square.
Eight year old Ronald Rogers called The Daily News around 9 PM to report a falling star visible on the northwest horizon. He lives at 1222 West Fifteenth.
M and Elbert Day pleaded not guilty to murder in Randall County where trial dates will be set after papers filed in Canyon. They are in Amarillo custody with heavy guard and leg irons, awaiting a special venire. each already serving federal terms for kidnapping and interstate auto theft.
