In Houston on September 18 a cash bond of 2500 was posted by Neal Powers before U S Commissioner W F Carothers. Attorneys for Renne Allred Jr brother of Gov Allred said they would post bond for H E Hines a third man named in a federal hot oil indictment. Hines was last heard of in Kentucky as the search continued for him. Powers had been an aide to Gov Allred when he was attorney general and arrived with two East Texas oil men to post the bond. Attys said they would forward papers from the Houston marshal to Dallas for the bond posting. Hines remained a fugitive on another federal oil conspiracy indictment.
Walter Mayo of Cleburne, 34, died in a Fort Worth hospital after a Friday night crash on Northwest Highway. Melvin Layland, 23, also of Cleburne, died shortly after the accident. Two of seven others injured remained in critical condition.
Dr. Raymond Ditmars, Bronx Zoo reptilia curator, returned from Trinidad with twelve leptodactylus fallax frogs. Customs questioned their fate as he admitted six consigned to the zoo and five cooked for dinner, leaving one later sacrificed for the legs.
National judges begin prize judging at 9 am with formal expo opening at 10 30 am led by W Lee O Danial. Gov Clyde Tingley of New Mexico to introduce him at 3 pm. Movita John Carroll and Jack Randall fly in for the fair as Beutler Brothers Rodeo starts at 2 pm. Events run all day with midways open and fireworks at 10 pm.
