James Louis Pierce 28 was shot four times in the lobby of the courthouse while being escorted to a habeas corpus hearing. Gilbert, facing statutory charges from a 12 year old girl, fired from behind, killing Pierce. Gilbert was taken into custody. Pierce’s body was taken to Griggs Undertaking. an inquest was set for morning. Pierce's family mourns in Amarillo.
