Five Survivors From Sinking Pelagia Rescued in Arctic
A British trawler Northern Duke rescued five survivors from a lifeboat after the American freighter Pelagia sank in a gale above the Arctic circle. The ship split in two with 32 men lost. five exhausted survivors were brought toward Harstad Norway, while search efforts continued unsuccessfully for others.

Traffic Deaths Hit New High in Area August
August highway deaths in the Texas Panhandle district reached 18, with 77 injuries and $107,753 in property damage. In eight months, 61 people died and 515 were injured while 575,504 in damage occurred. Speeding led the tally with 514 arrests. 33 patrolmen logged 88,515 miles and 4,327 day hours plus 2,798 night hours.

Steer Stuck on Rock Island Bridge Delays Train
A 900-pound steer owned by Floyd Brown of Adrian became wedged mid span on a 100 foot Rock Island trestle six miles west of Adrian. Four cowboys levered the animal free after about 20 minutes, finding it injured but walking away. Bridwell ranch manager H S Betts said the steer was found around 1 40 p m and had been stuck for several hours.

Tanker Truck Blast Fatal To Two Men
Two men died after an oil tanker exploded on a downgrade eight miles northeast of Borger near Spring Creek. Tommy Guyer 30 and J C Snow 35 died from burns suffered when crude leaked then ignited from the truck red. Guyer died at the scene and Snow died at North Plains Hospital later. Both worked for J A Robinson Sons. Funeral arrangements were set by local funeral homes.

The Kentucky Council on Human Relations announced that 29 of Kentucky's 40 colleges and universities will admit Negro students. Assistant Secretary of Defense Carter L. Burgess faced a form letter notice from the Army for lagging in reserve point credits. A district of Columbia Army Reserve letter went out after a clerical check, prompting Burgess’s embarrassment and irritation at the impersonal approach.
