United Automobile Workers strike at the Briggs body factory slows operations across Chrysler plants in Detroit. About 18,900 workers are idle, two plants closed, and 12,600 dealers face delays as 1939 Plymouth displays were planned nationwide. Talks between Chrysler and the union resumed after disputes over production speed and terminations.
The Civilian Conservation Corps announced it would enroll about 65,000 new men from Oct. 1 to 20 to fill vacancies created by enrollees who left for private work or whose terms expired. The replacements restore the corps to its authorized 300,000 strength, excluding Indians and territorials.
George Taylor his wife and five children traveled from Omaha Neb to Amarillo on two bicycles with trailers in a 70 day trek en route to Dallas. They finance the trip with souvenirs sold locally and plan to find work in Dallas. The family notes the journey is slow and hilly but they press on toward their next stop.
An eight man Supreme Court panel forms October 3 as President Roosevelt delays a nomination to fill Justice Cardozo’s death. Officials expect a liberal pick facing Senate scrutiny, with possible cross party or party shifts and a look to war emergency needs before a decision. Public Works grants totaling 448,899 for Amarillo Panhandle Texas projects including school additions and waterworks improve the region.
Tokyo officials said the cabinet is weighing stronger moral ties with Hitler's Germany and Mussolini's Italy as anti communist allies. A Foreign Office spokesman noted Japan is unlikely to sign a military pact but would use force if absolutely necessary to uphold the anti comintern spirit.
A wall collapse at a gravel pit 20 miles west of McAllen killed four laborers Sam Le Veck Lino Fuentes Juan Zamora and Jesus Bedinghaus all of McAllen. A fifth man escaped as rescuers worked through rock and earth buried between the pit wall and the truck. Bedinghaus was Claude Bedinghaus’s father, a former local football star.
Jess O. Moore, 22, a West Texas State College student, was critically injured when his car left Highway 60 near White Deer, struck a pole, and caused a power line short circuit. He was found unconscious beside his wrecked car by C. B. Chunn and his wife and taken to Worley Hospital. Moore had been returning from Canyon after registering for the fall term. The same curve saw a prior fatality and injuries on Sept. 2.
Japanese officers announced a long drive across Henan province ended with the capture of Shangcheng, 110 miles northeast of Hankow, placing them for a final push toward the Peiping Hankow railroad and the broader campaign.

New York police report Francis and Anna Greulich admitted stealing over 100000 dollars in stamps from Capt. G W Nowell-Usticke. Anna Greulich, long time employee of Stanley Gibbons Inc, aided by her husband, used an office network to obtain rare stamps. He set up a separate stamp office under an alias while using the loot to fund operations.
