A crowd of about 7000 lined the downtown streets for the annual Tri State Fair parade. City planners say downtown revival requires creating reasons for people to visit again, noting the crowd was smaller than opening day and that a bench on the mall will not solve the issue.

Other trophies went to First National Bank, Marine Corps Reserve, Rolling Hills Riding Club, Canyon High School Band, Caprock MCJROTC, Opportunity School, and Khiva Temple Klowns. About 7,000 spectators attended as West Texas State University Buffalo Band led the 100-unit parade, a Tri-State Fair opener.
The Federal Reserve Board reports August industrial output rose 1.3 percent, the sharpest gain in nearly three years, with production of consumer goods driving the increase. Revisions show the upturn began in May with a 2.7 percent rise since then, suggesting a more vigorous economy recovery than earlier estimates.
Eritrean rebels threatened to kill four American prisoners held in a northern Ethiopian mountain cave unless the United States halts arms supplies to the Ethiopian military regime. The ELF spokesman in Beirut said the rebels demanded a public U S pledge and warned they cannot wait forever while the White House acknowledged receiving some information.
President Ford denied an immediate resumption of grain exports to the Soviet Union after a meeting with American Farm Bureau leaders led by William J. Kuhfuss. Palestinian guerrillas seized the Egyptian embassy in Madrid threatening to kill the ambassador and two aides unless Egypt withdrew from Geneva talks with Israel. After a 16 hour siege they flew to Algiers with hostages, promising to free them and surrender. 13 people aboard the plane included four guerrillas and five hostages. Ambassadors of Algeria Kuwait Jordan and Iraq negotiated to secure release.
Forecast shows mild nights and warm days through Wednesday with highs in the upper 80s on today and Wednesday. Lows near the 60s tonight and wind variable at 5 to 15 mph today.
