Nine men were shaken up and one with a broken arm after fast freight No. 228 derailed eight miles west of Tucumcari New Mexico. Sixteen cars left the track on a high grade while a box car toppled three times injuring crew members. The track was blocked until 8 PM with estimated losses at least 75000 dollars even if perishables are saved.
Miss Dorothy Gillin, 24, died in Houston after a thunder clap woke her and caused fright. Her mother described the frightened awakening and the girl’s subsequent collapse. She had a long history of a weak heart and the death was pronounced by a physician.
The Plateau Singing Association held its most successful convention at Forrest near Tucumcari. About 1200 attended the all day event highlighted by a noon basket picnic. Willard Welch of McAlister served as president and Earl Hineman of Tucumcari as secretary.
The North Fillmore Street underpass in Amarillo is set to receive one third of its about $160,000 cost as state aid. Mayor Thompson announced the plan after a telegram from R. S. Sterling of the state highway commission approved allocating roughly $54,000 for the project to be shared by the city railroads and state, with Fort Worth & Denver and Rock Island each contributing one sixth. The underpass will serve state highways 66 88 and 5 and bids will be invited to start work promptly.
Hamburg report says Captain Karl Boyed, 58, a German propagandist and diplomat deported by the United States in 1915, died from injuries after a horse fall near his estate. He had been linked to sabotage and fraudulent passports, and was recalled from Washington in 1915.
Independent Petroleum Association of Texas hosts two key meetings in Pampa Tuesday and Amarillo Wednesday nights. Executive Secretary Claude Wild and President Tom Cranfill speak on local proration and price structures while Cranfill outlines the national oil picture. Senator Clint Small of Wellington also attends Amarillo to discuss public interest in the oil business.
Jim White, famed Carlsbad Cavern explorer, locates a large burial cave near Carlsbad Cavern National Park containing mummies of an ancient race in near perfect preservation. Among finds are two adults, two children, four heads with hair colors, and mortuary gear. Location kept private for protection until arrangements are made.
H N Roberts reports West Texas drought varied by area during the 1929 30 water year with Amarillo up 10 percent above average while far west regions remained deficient. He bases figures on U S Weather Bureau data and notes no area reached a 50 percent shortfall.
Los Angeles report says Milton Sills aged 48 died of a heart attack while playing tennis with his wife and son at their suburban home. Mrs. Sills Doris Kenyon confirms the actor appeared in good health at game start. he collapsed on court and died at 6 45 p m after being stricken.
Season parking tickets offered at the Tri-State Fair cost 3 dollars each. Each ticket reserves a numbered space for the holder for the duration of the fair. Tickets available at the fair office or the Central Fire Station next to city hall.
The Santa Fe system has spent about eighty six thousand dollars on yard improvements in Hereford and Pampa. Hereford projects include four miles of track relaying, heavier rails, and new cattle and hog pens costing around six thousand dollars. A twelve room bunk house for laborers is under construction near the depot at a cost near six thousand dollars. At Pampa, depot extensions totaling about twelve thousand four hundred dollars are planned with new wings and a furnace basement.

A top producing oil well near Oklahoma City forced the evacuation of more than 1000 pupils from Wheeler School as a 65000 barrel daily gusher was shut under control. The school board, citing fire hazard, ordered temporary relocation to nearby schools after a recommendation from Fire Chief George Goff.
Congresswoman Ruth Hanna McCormick charges Senator Gerald P Nye feared disclosures would emerge from the Senate investigating committee causing today’s abrupt adjournment. Attorney General Oscar Carlstrom seeks a hearing and records from private detectives used by McCormick will be entered in the record at tomorrow’s session in Chicago.
Pampa reports a new oil well near Creek & Hoover on Roberta Sullivan land in section 136, block B. It burst Sunday morning spraying 60 000 to 70 000 cubic feet of gas and 1 000 to 5 000 barrels of oil over the Santa Fe railroad right of way and nearby highway, forcing rerouted traffic. Workers fear threads were misaligned as they attempt control. Two oil catch tanks stand but oil loss continues as wind shifts.
Advocates for an 834 mile rail line from Big Spring to Vega win backing from three state departments and pledge bipartisan support from Gov candidate Sterling. Rail commission and attorney general plan to participate, with hearings set to begin November 1 as competing lines challenge the proposal. Representatives from multiple West Texas towns attended.
Harold Bromley and Howard Gatty, exhausted, reached Ominato in a dilapidated car after a Pacific crossing attempt from Japan to Tacoma failed early today. They came from Shitstkari where Bromley’s fourth nonstop transpacific flight ended 15 hours earlier on the beach.
