Gertrude Berg, famed Molly Goldberg of radio and long time star of Broadway and television, died Wednesday in a New York hospital.
An Interstate Commerce Commission examiner tours the Burlington route from Denver to Dallas, holding hearings in Clayton Amarillo and other towns. Community protest will be heard, with focus on service loss and potential six month trials of modern high speed trains before service ends.
Charles Conrad and Richard Gordon completed over three hours aloft aboard Gemini 11 and Agena in a tandem free drift. They separated from the Agena, set an Atlantic splashdown near Cape Kennedy, with an automatic landing plan if weather holds and radar allows a final rendezvous.
The Senate refused to halt civil rights debate 54 to 42, falling 10 votes short of the two thirds needed for cloture. Senate Democratic Leader Mansfield of Montana left space for a possible second bid, saying a new move could come early Monday after consulting with Sen. Hart and weighing options.
A Quay County deputy sheriff testified on Wednesday that a woman identifying herself as Billie Rose called to request the sheriff and Dr Wallace, then shot her husband T. G Rose. Sheriff Claude Moncus later described the scene at the Rose ranch, where Rose lay dead in a Western shirt, as Dr. Jess Wallace joined him at the family home northeast of Tucumcari.
The Foreign Ministry announced the detention of Peace Corps member Thomas Roszelle Dawson and expelled diplomat Donald R. Lesh amid border violation probes. The U S Embassy denied wrongdoing by both and argued for Dawson’s release, saying he was headed to the border in innocence.
The Senate approved legislation to raise the minimum wage from 1.25 to 1.40 by 1968 and extend coverage to eight million workers. The bill passed 55 to 38 after a partisan fight and moves to the President. It adds farm workers and other groups to the act with phased increases beginning February 1967.
A federal court jury convicted Ku Klux Klan imperial wizard Robert M. Shelton of contempt of Congress after hearing he refused to produce Klan records. Shelton, 36, plans to appeal, facing up to one year in prison and a $1000 fine.
U S District Judge Claude Clayton ordered all classes suspended for today in Grenada Mississippi to prevent disturbances during a hearing in Oxford about protection for Negro pupils. He required local officials to attend court and directed Schools Supt Gayle Witham to reopen Friday amid a tense peace guarded by state troopers and highway patrols following violent incidents the prior days.
