Eight persons received ALTA statuettes at a ceremony in Amarillo as part of a special service recognizing contributions to the city’s arts. The awards, presented annually by White & Kirk, honored achievements in public affairs, arts, literature, science, and entertainment.
Miss America 1965 is Vanda Van Dyke a senior at Arizona State. She impressed with ventriloquism talent and an informal faith driven interview. Her stance on religion framed as faith not magic, highlighting wholesomeness over cynicism.
G W McCullough of Phillips Petroleum defined free enterprise as a life way where the individual is central, covering the rights to open a store or buy a farm, to be boss, to save or spend, and to raise children as one sees fit. A trench about 15 feet deep in Pleasant Valley Amarillo collapsed at the 500 block of W Colorado killing Harry Willits Jr. and Cresencia Reyes and injuring Earl Williams and Guillermo Diaz. Williams was listed in good condition and Diaz in fair condition at Northwest Texas Hospital. The men were part of Foran Construction Co crew laying a sewer line as hydraulic braces were being installed. Funeral arrangements for Willits and Reyes were announced.
Campaign manager Charley Gibson of 830 Western will lead the Johnson Humphrey slate in the Panhandle. A veteran Democrat active since 1948, Gibson has held party roles from precinct to state level and attended many national conventions. Potter County caucus named a district chairman to avoid a floor fight as Carl Hill Jr. chose not to seek re election. Claudia Brummett of Amarillo was elected district committeewoman.
Art L Wagoner a prominent Amarillo cattleman and oilman aged 78 died at his home 2603 Harmony at 7 55 p m Monday born in Guthrie Illinois he built cattle operations in the Texas Panhandle and held ranching and oil interests in New Mexico and Texas his offices were in the Amarillo Hotel He was a member of the First Christian Church and belonged to Texas cattle associations Funeral arrangements are with Blackburn Shaw Funeral Directors Survivors include his wife Willie of the home nephews Robert and Joe Wagoner Hereford William A Pam pa and Victor Amarillo nieces Mrs Seldon Hudson Groom and Mrs John Cross Bydmont

He said the United States supports unity to prevent armed conflict after the Sunday uprising and aims to help forge stable government while avoiding withdrawal or rash war.
Mrs. G. N. Mc Daniel of Berger was elected chairman of List Senatorial district Republicans in a district caucus Monday night on the eve of the Texas GOP convention. Business sessions of the state convention open Tuesday with speakers listed.
Delegates from the district re elected W Glynn Morris of Amarillo and Mrs Warren Fatheree of Pampa as district committeeman and committeewoman. Mrs Hugh Seewald of Amarillo was elected permanent secretary. The caucus submitted three names for presidential elector: Ernest Stroud and John O'Brien of Amarillo and G N McDaniel of Borger.
NASA announced the two man Gemini mission with Virgil Grissom and John Young is postponed from 1964 to the first three months of 1965. Lightning damage to the Titan 2 rocket and hurricanes Cleo and Dora caused the delay, shifting the unmanned test and manned flight schedule accordingly.
