A grand jury investigates the slaying of Luther Darnell Richman Merrill land dispute in Newfoundland grows with latest counts narrowing margins. Incumbent Solon facing Democrat challenger in Senate race.
Advance returns from 163 of 633 Maine precincts show U S Senator Wallace H White Jr Republican incumbent leading Governor Louis J Brann Democrat by about 1500 votes. Governor race tightens as Barrows Republican leads Dubord Democrat about 2 to 1 with 163 precincts reported. Heavy turnout and weather boost votes as campaigns predict victory.
Potter County grand jury reviewed the murder of Luther M. Darnell, plumber, with Elton Slim Nall under investigation and no indictment issued. Nall remains calm in jail after 48 hours. his wife confirmed an affair between Darnell and herself, including a 16 day San Antonio trip in May. Darnell, father of six, was killed on his porch at 411 North West Twelfth Avenue. his wife reportedly promised to end the relation. The case moves toward continued proceedings.
Three of ten Ward County inmates who escaped Reeves County jail last Saturday were found this morning along U S Highway 80 near Pyote Texas. They are T W Matthews William Wheatley and Ed Kasparek. The remaining escapees E W Pratt T W Johnson W A Stone W C White L H Williams Bob Sharp and Fred Martin are still at large.
At a hearing in Elizabethtown New York attorneys for Col Edward H R Green's sister alleged a pre nuptial agreement by the late financier’s widow renouncing all claim to an $80 000 000 estate A suggestion was made that a second will may favor the widow over the sister Mrs Matthew Astor Wilkes as the two claimants contest control of the inheritance
District Attorney Wardlow Lane said the death penalty will be sought for Mrs. Reable Childs in the death of her husband Marlie W. Childs. Bramlette’s trial is set for Sept. 21 after severance of cases. Jurors questioned on publicity and suspended sentence law amid complex vigilant proceedings.
Fair officials say the Tri-State Fair in Amarillo will open in six days with the largest exposition in the area’s history. The 120 acre grounds bustle as concessionaires, exhibitors, bands, and visiting delegations prepare, with more than 30 bands expected and radio broadcasts planned from the grounds.
W F Bill Goodloe longtime Santa Fe division freight and passenger agent since 1920 is promoted to general livestock agent with headquarters in Kansas City. M C Burton announces the move and outlines the immediate personnel shifts including Kancher to succeed Goodloe in Lubbock and Forbes moving to San Angelo.
Roy D. Shankle a 38 year old power company employee shot and killed himself in the bathroom of his Houston home today.
Irving G. Thalberg aged 37, noted motion picture producer and husband of Norma Shearer, died in Santa Monica after a bout with lobar pneumonia. He contracted a cold on vacation at Del Monte and weakened in the last two days. Thalberg rose from private secretary at Carl Laemmle’s studio to MGM production head and vice president in charge of production.
In Kansas City a murder charge was filed against Charles D. Ernst 45 year old law graduate and cleaning plant operator in connection with the death of transient Crying Hank Burke. Police say Ernst offered to insure others lives and pay premiums, with two other deaths under investigation. Ernst was arrested Sept 5 as a year long probe into penniless drifters dying under suspicious circumstances investigated an insurance plot. Public hearings on state unemployment insurance open in Austin tomorrow and run through Wednesday per R B Anderson.
Harry Richman and Dick Merrill completed a round trip crossing but were forced to land in a marsh near Musgrave Harbor Newfoundland. They reported being marooned and needing supplies in a telegram to Eddie Rickenbacker. Rickenbacker arranged an immediate rescue by air loaded with gasoline a battery oil and a replacement propeller at Hartford Connecticut.
TWA chief Jack Frye, born in the Texas Panhandle and now leading Trans Continental & Western Air, will speak at the Aviation Day banquet. Other speakers include T. E. Braniff of Oklahoma and Col. J. Carroll Cone, with remarks at the luncheon hosted by the Chamber of Commerce.
United States Marshal Cliff Hudson will take W. G. Funderburk to Tyler for arraignment before Commissioner Alfie Noble on extortion charges. Funderburk, jailed in Angelina County, said two Louisiana brothers advised bail. His wife received a letter demanding 1500 dollars for his safe return. Federal officers charged him with mailing the extortion letter.
Los Angeles district attorney files a morals charge against Dave Gould film studio dance director for an offense involving Katharine Roberts a 14 year old Oklahoma girl seeking a film career. Bond set at 10000 dollars. Warranty issued to Juvenile Officer A S Deaton to arrest Gould. Deaton and two other juvenile officers say Katharine was found in an exclusive Beverly Hills hotel with a film writer after her sister Aline Roberts reported she had been out late at parties.
Woodward Oklahoma plans the third largest rodeo in the world for September 18 to 20. A 42 piece Woodward high school band led a 135 member delegation to Amarillo to invite Panhandle cities. The crowd heard performers including Jack and Bob Ferrier and three rodeo queens. Meno Schoenback and J O Selman outlined the three day program and noted world champion cowboys will compete.
Estell Baker, 31, died from injuries after a hit and run on Highway 75. His crushed body was found in front of a local cafe in Madisonville. Baker worked for a motor company at Midway. Police investigate the driver and scene.
Forecast for Amarillo and West Texas calls for Tuesday to be partly cloudy and cooler with a similar trend for the Panhandle. New Mexico is expected to stay generally fair with little temperature change. Historical hourly readings show a range from around 67 to 98 degrees with varying minimums and maximums across yesterday’s data.
Madrid Sept 14 government forces said secret police halted an alleged Fascist plot to kill President Manuel Azana and Premier Francisco Largo Caballero. Anti-espionage police reported most top officials targeted. Nine arrested including six alleged ringleaders.
In Perryton on September 14, Sheriff Talley pursues a lead from Oregon State Penitentiary official War den J W Lewis that convicts Claude and Elmer Tennison confessed to the 1932 Cone murders. Officers discount the confession but follow every clue as the Cone boys age 13 and 10 are said to be alive. The 1932 inquest ruled death by suicide. no evidence of murder.
The 1937 Studebaker cars are shown today at McClure-Craig Inc. 710 712 Taylor Street. Models are split into President and Dictator lines with base prices of 965 and 665 dollars f o b factory. New chassis and overdrive transmission mark the improvements over 1936.
