Britain and Czechoslovakia confront a tightened stand off over Sudeten German demands. Konrad Henlein pushes for a plebiscite while Prague rejects martial law repeal. International pressure from France and Britain mounts to secure order and negotiations.
The Panhandle Old Settlers Association led by Jep Todd of Canadian plans its twenty fourth annual meeting at the Tri State Fair. Delegations with bands will attend the exposition with opening ceremonies led by W Lee O Daniel. Tickets offer a family friendly Cavalcade of Hits show and rodeo access.
In Beaumont a platform committee backed a pension pledge for all eligible elderly under constitutional limits amid controversy. The plank aligns with O'Daniel’s universal pension vow, while opposing voices call it insufficient. The committee also endorsed Garner for 1940 and praised industrialization, but omitted liquor and tax issues.
The Roosevelt County Fair starts today in Portales in new fair buildings including a main hall, cattle and livestock, and a hog barn. Highlights include a downtown parade at 10 AM, rodeo at 2 PM, and a banquet with loving cups tonight. The schedule continues Friday and Saturday with rodeo, horse shows, and a grandstand program. Director Tom Aislip leads the fair alongside board members Dee Howard and others.
Amarillo public schools board approves black and gold West Point style uniforms for the Amarillo High School Band. Financing includes Navy Band appearance in Amarillo on November 4 and a donated Paramount Theater midnight matinee by George Tucker. Uniforms to be ordered immediately and arrive within a month. Avery Bush, band parents association president, anticipates delivery.
Nationwide political focus shifts to Georgia and Maryland as early returns shape senatorial and gubernatorial contests. In Maryland Tydings leads Lewis with significant margins while Georgia candidates including Senator George face a crowded field with Camp backed by the President and pension debate looming.
Rotary and Kiwanis prepare for a donkey baseball charity game at Jaycee Field on the Canyon highway. Donkeys will be used as players led by Ed Hardin Walter wn Paul Edgiu and Allen Early with Edquist as pitcher while Howard Paul and Fred Bone aid in the outfield. Admission is 25 cents and proceeds benefit the Preventorium and the Maverick Club.
E. E. Reynolds, 35, of Amarillo, was given a 99 year term after a Potter County jury found him guilty of assaulting a 13 year old girl on May 1. The jury deliberated 50 minutes after hearing testimony that she worked in Reynolds’ home and was taken to the country where the attack occurred. Reynolds, an ex convict, did not testify and defense lawyers signaled acceptance of the sentence.
District Attorney Thomas F. Dewey plans to renew the 14 word question that Justice Pecora called fatally prejudicial as he moves to retry Tammany district leader James J. Hines on charges of protecting the Dutch Schultz policy racket. Pecora said a retrial would have cost more if the jury had convicted. Dewey said Hines will be brought to justice at the earliest date.
Old age pension advocates push a $30 every Thursday proposal to be added to the New Mexico Republican platform. Fred Nicholas, head of the State Republican Program Committee, said backers asked the committee to consider the plank at its September 23 meeting and offered no further stance.
Secretary Hull said he talks daily by telephone with President Roosevelt to keep him informed about Europe. He noted no instruction had been issued to encourage American tourists to leave Europe and that one person could assess the situation as well as another.

WPA Administrator Fred Healey testified as the first witness alongside WPA investigator Donald Ainesworth WPA state finance officer J C Heater and Albuquerque WPA administrator FE A Rose.
Dr. John H. Sanford prominent physician and former mayor of Santa Rosa is held without bail on a murder charge in the July death of his wife Hallie Sanford at a Tucumcari hospital. Authorities plan to exhume the body after a seven week inquiry into the burial and unclear death certificate.
Adolf Hitler stayed at his Bavarian mountaintop home consulting aides as reports spread of additional Sudeten Germans killed in Czechoslovakia. Berlin officials watched developments closely while Goering backed calls on Europe to decide soon whether self determination should be denied for 4,500,000 Sudeten Germans.
About 1,600 workers returned to duties at the Armour and Company packing plant in Kansas City Kansas marking a restart after a shutdown.
