The Texas Senate and House move relief for delinquent taxes delaying penalties. Gov. Ferguson expands work for the session as a sales tax relief bill advances for floor action. Opponents fear the measure weakens tax enforcement and hopes for a quick conference on differences.
Chicago reports Sally Rand the fan dancer announced engagement to Charles Mayon of Springfield Massachusetts after five years knowing him. She said after the season they will marry in Florida and she plans to quit performing to lead a quiet home life including cooking and raising children.
The mayor asked the governor for a new laundry code in Pidgin English. The Want Ad code remains simple, “More Results.” Globe-News used an ad to sell a 29 Model A Ford Roadster with motor in good shape, cheap, phone 2-1127.
Voters in Maryland and Georgia named nominees for one Senate seat and 16 House seats plus two governorships. Maryland Democrats appear to back Governor Ritchie and Radcliffe for senator, with Goldsborough a leading Republican hopeful. Georgia sees Pittman and Talmadge contending for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination amid a tight race. several Democratic congressmen are renominated. Additional returns show Schwel lenbach winning the Democratic Senate nomination and Olympia banker Reno Odlin leading Republicans for their party’s Senate spot.
Senate munitions committee hearings reveal Du Ponts tested the 1916 retroactive war tax amid $1.245 billion wartime orders. Pierre and Irenee du Pont defend profits, dividends, and stock allocations while noting retroactive taxation and government needs.
Washington September 12 The textile strike mediation board reports the issues of the bitter conflict are so deeply seated that immediate arbitration seems impossible.
Testimony began in the Claude Pollard trial with Farle E F Bower as the first witness. Bower said Pollard allegedly consented to use 100000 counterfeit cigarette tax stamps, while defense urged a narrower indictment focus. Pollard pleads not guilty as judge overrules motion to quash. Bower described stamps bought through Stribling with promised protection and ties to Pollard.
D. D. Little Jr., son of the Florence Mill president, was wounded in the chin by an accidental pistol discharge. The shot occurred during a guard duty patrol when Officer C. N. Stalnaker’s holstered weapon fired. Witnesses offered no explanation for the discharge.
Fair Thursday across Amarillo and western Texas with little temperature change. New Mexico similarly fair with modest shifts in daytime heat. Historical hour by hour readings are incomplete but indicate mild, dry conditions through the day.
The Panhandle drought area stands to receive a comprehensive highway relief program to aid unemployed residents. John E. Hill of the All Panhandle League announced after returning from San Angelo where Panhandle representatives conferred with relief authorities. Delegation spokesman Julius Dorenfield said federal relief prefers road work since most funds support labor. Plans call for resumed highway projects approved by the Bureau of Public Roads and the Texas Highway Department. County relief boards will prepare their estimates for the program.
Government purchase of drought stricken cattle has been halted to allow an audit by Agricultural Adjustment Administration officials. C. M. Crain, head of the Texas Relief Commission surplus commodities division, said the action was advised by AAA representative George W. Barnes of College Station. No resume date is set.
In SHANGHAT on Sept 12 a Chinese student reportedly set a world record by consuming 72 shelled watermelon seeds in one minute. He cracks husks with his teeth without spilling kernels, showing a practiced method of husk disposal and kernel extraction.
Fourteen buyers were sent into the drought area to purchase purebred cattle for about 2,000 breeders short of feed. Government pays up to 75 for cattle with calves, 60 for bred cows, 60 for purebred bulls, 45 for yearlings, and 25 for calves to tide breeders over and protect breeding stock.
Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh were grounded in Wichita awaiting a replacement plane from St Louis after a left wheel support failed on landing. One wing dropped to the ground but only minor damage occurred.
The Tri-State Fair celebrates Amarillo Day with schools closed and many employees allowed to attend. Downtown Amarillo decorates for the twelfth annual exposition as delegations arrive and the opening ceremony led by Wilbur C. Hawk and Mayor Ross Rogers airs at 10 o clock Monday.
Box seats for the Tri- State Fair races go on sale at the Fair Grounds this morning per Wilbur C Hawk president of the fair association. Box seats cost 25 cents while regular admission is 50 cents including grandstand seating. Races start at 2 p m Saturday afternoon and run throughout the fair with low admission rates.
A New Mexico Day special train will carry about 500 delegates to the Tri State Fair in Amarillo on September 21. Governor A W Hockenhull is expected as guest of honor, with Tucumcari and surrounding territory invited. Schools will be excused to attend, highlighting educational features of the event.
The chief radio operator describes an awful mess aboard the liner amid disturbances reported at sea. He testifies to chaotic conditions and concerns over safety and order during the incident.
Testimony cites possible spite work by crew members and job fear aboard the Ward liner now wrecked on the Jersey coast. Chief Radio Operator George Rogers described delays in sending SOS and officers noted unrest led by George Alagna, with relatives of the Morro Castle tragedy under federal scrutiny and possible indictment by a federal grand jury.
In Chickasha Oklahoma a 60 year old man identified as John Smith of El Paso Texas was shot and killed by deputy sheriffs Hosea Haley and Bud Mead after he drew a revolver and snapped it at them on a street. Also reported Chicago case involves Marie Conforti pleading guilty to harboring outlaw Homer Van Meter and gunmen hideouts involving William and Ella Finerty in Calumet City.
