Reports from nine corps area headquarters show more than 16,092,781 civilians and volunteers joined Defense Day exercises across the country along with 6,535 local demonstrations. About two million troops were reportedly at war strength or near it, and 40,000 nurses were available for emergencies. Secretary Weeks and General Pershing addressed audiences via 38,000 miles of radio lines, praising the defense test plan and saluting Pershing as the nation’s foremost soldier.

Secret underground railway for aliens smuggling probed
San Antonio Sept. 12 A long suspected underground railway for smuggling Europeans into the United States via Mexico is being probed by immigration officials. Three Spaniards detained Sunday night admitted they were recruited by a steamship line to be smuggled through Vera Cruz. Mexican authorities will prosecute ring members and return aliens to their country. Immigration officers say cooperation between the Mexican government and the United States is under way to end the crossing from Mexico.
