In Santiago the La Moneda palace and Allende residence were bombarded after the junta demanded Allende resign. Army air force and police units seized control while rebels captured Communist Party offices. Augusto Pinochet leads the new junta as portents of chaos end.

The University of Texas will turn off many lights over the weekend and holidays to curb energy use. Lighting will be reduced in classrooms offices streets and parking areas. A special schedule with university police will monitor women s dormitories.
In Dearborn Michigan fire captain Peter Gherardini paralyzed and in a wheelchair after a 45 foot fall through a weakened roof at Ford Motor Co Rouge plant. A Wayne County jury awarded 2.25 million to Gherardini and 500000 to his wife for loss of companionship citing failure to warn firemen about roof dangers.

Three 19 year old Amarillo men were jailed in Randall County on charges of assault with intent to murder after the Sunday night shooting of David Hugo Loewenstern. He was shot twice in the abdomen when three youths barged into his apartment.
Three men including Mike Bryant Roy Norton and Phillip Max Clark were arrested between 5 and 9 am at their homes in connection with a shooting at Lantern Square Apartments in Amarillo. Bonds were set at 20000 each and the arrests followed tips received Monday. The shooting occurred at 1158 p m Sunday in an apartment shared by brothers. The younger brother claimed the shooting came after three youths knocked on the door.
Washington reports a 1974 corn crop to reach a record 5.768 billion bushels up 4 percent from last year and 2 percent above August forecast. Wheat rises to 1.727 billion bushels, up 12 percent. exports exceed 1.3 billion bushels mid year. Prices likely stay high into 1974's first half.
