In Samson Park Texas a Thursday night council dispute over a $2.05 water bill led to a wild melee. Mayor A C Hicks was struck with his own gavel, blood on the council table, and city secretary Toy Pulliam hit in the eye. Police Chief Emmett Burch, blamed by Hicks for not stopping the fight, said he intervened.
In Crystal City Texas Judge Ross Doughty partially resolved a chaotic series of firings by city officials. He restored city manager George Ozuna and police chief Ray Perez to their posts while warning mayor Juan Cornejo and councilman Mario Hernandez they may be ousted again. The judge delayed ruling on city councilman Reynaldo Mendoza’s removal tied to a $125.98 debt and planned further legal review before deciding Ozuna and Perez’s fate. The muddle may continue as long as the charter is not violated.
The Amarillo Police Academy awarded diplomas to 22 graduates including three men from Amarillo Air Force Base. Training lasted six weeks and increased force strength to 150 of a 176 authorized. Duty began Friday night for some, with others to start by Monday. Seventeen recruits joined patrol, traffic, and service divisions, featuring James Ray Dean and 12 others on patrol among the group.
President Johnson visited Hurricane Dora damaged Florida and Georgia coastlines in a surprise Florida tour. They failed to reach an agreement as the moratorium on demonstrations appeared ready to be lifted and state livestock yards were said to reopen. The meeting drew thousands to Dane County Fair Grounds while over 100 police stood by with no incidents reported.
