A bus and a pickup truck collided near Commerce with four injured. The dead were in the truck, and both vehicles were destroyed by fire. Passengers and the driver escaped by breaking windows as flames swept both wrecks. Bus driver T. W. Helms of Mesquite, Texas credited sailors on the bus before rescue.
The International Longshoremen's Association reran a waterfront strike in New York after five hours off the picket line. Executive VP Patrick J. Connolly said the strike was on again following a legislator's disavowal of an agreement to study union grievances against the Waterfront Commission of New York harbor.
Four people were killed in a spate of incidents across the Golden Spread with three highway crashes and an accidental shooting. Eleven others were hospitalized. Elmer Joe Widener, 20, Borger, died when a car returning from a youth meeting overturned seven miles north of Amarillo on the Fritch road around 8 p.m. Widener’s sister Janise, 16, suffered a fractured shoulder and possible leg, Jack McIntyre of Borger had internal injuries, Patsy had throat lacerations and two fractured collar bones, and Virginia Thompson, 16, of Phillips, fractured a collar bone. All were treated at St. Anthony’s hospital in fair condition. James Leslie Weaver, 14, son of Mr and Mrs Virgel Weaver, died on arrival at Highland General Hospital in Pampa after being shot along with neighbor boy Ronald Harris.
Officials convene in Plainview as the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority considers a 76 million dollar bond to build a dam on the Canadian River and an aqueduct serving Panhandle and South Plain cities. Amarillo and Pampa may seek withdrawal. petitions could trigger city votes on bonds and membership. Directors to decide water contract forms for member cities.
Geneva woman Ruth Craine, 49, told LaSalle County authorities that hoodlum demands drove her and her husband Leon, 52, to end their lives together in a car at Indian Acres near Streator. Autopsy showed Leon died from exhaust inhalation. Ruth survived when engine quit as she fainted. Authorities noted the couple had faced arson charges.
