After a trial lasting more than 20 hours the 47th district court jury convicted O M Redding of murder without malice and sentenced him to five years in the state penitentiary. The jury denied a suspended sentence and returned the verdict at about 3 55 yesterday afternoon.
Governor Coke Stevenson urged Texas Democratic factions to compromise on printing both pro and anti Roosevelt elector slates on the November ballot. He pushed for a parallel listing of 23 anti Roosevelt and 23 pro Roosevelt electors to let voters decide. The convention remained in a bargaining stage with party leaders negotiating county vote bases and potential convention posts.
In Austin the State Executive Committee sub committee on credentials heard contests from Harrison and Tarrant counties for seating at the state convention amid pro and anti Roosevelt factions. Testimony showed Harrison County held precinct sessions then seated delegates, triggering a walkout led by anti Roosevelt forces while pro Roosevelt cited partial precinct representation.

Mrs. Mary Peterson died yesterday in Washington DC at 87. She was mother to May Peterson Thompson and several sons including Dean in Washington and Frank in Amarillo. Funeral services are planned in Oshkosh Wisconsin with burial in Riverside Cemetery. Her Danish birth and violinist father are noted, her evangelist husband preceded her in death.
Allied forces push into the outskirts of Pistoia and reach the Gothic Line as German units counter along the Adriatic front near Rimini. British and Indian troops report fierce German counter-attacks and hold positions around Castelnuovo with retreats into the Apennines noted.
American First Army soldiers fire into German soil near Aachen at 3 30 PM as Allied forces link with British along the Albert Canal. U S troops reach Luxembourg city while patrolling toward the Dutch border. Third Army crosses the Moselle near Toul as British and Canadian units gain ground in Belgium and Holland.
Allied dispatches say French troops moved within 16 miles of Belfort after heavy fighting with German defenders guarding the gap into the Black Forest. Americans press toward Belfort from the southwest, reaching the Doubs valley near Baume les Dames and Clerval as Autun falls and French units push along the Saone River.
Russian troops surged through Transylvania and into nearby regions as 250000 Axis troops reportedly faced isolation in Yugoslavia Greece and Albania. Soviet advances along the Carpathians and into Moldavia widened a widening drive toward Romania and Hungary.
Potter County Commissioners and Amarillo taxpayers meet at 10 in the county courtroom to fix next year’s levy. A 4 cent increase from 56 cents is proposed, with C T Crowe leading the Taxpayers Association in urging maintainence of the current rate citing year end balances and prior year performance.
In Texas Plains counties harvest is underway and a tractor driver shortage grips the area. D A Adam of Texas A and M Extension says he can place 557 drivers today, with Deaf Smith Randall Armstrong counties most critical and Lamb Collingsworth Hockley Lubbock Terry Brown also in need. He also reports 318 combine operators and 219 truck drivers sought.
German long range batteries fired salvos across the channel last night and today as Allied forces reported movement in the Dover area. The action disrupted coastal positions and drew rapid responses from nearby garrisons and naval units.
