One hundred open housing demonstrators staged a four hour sit in in Mayor Henry Maier s City Hall office and were ejected by reinforced police forces who rushed to the scene after the Negro demonstrators left the office in disarray.
White demonstrators smashed ash trays overturned furniture and rifled files as police arrested at least four followers of Rev James E Groppi during a Milwaukee NAACP protest for an open housing ordinance. Groppi was absent and aides called the scene chaotic with offices left in disarray.
Workmen on Mansfield Dam at Lake Travis spotted a military rocket among driftwood. A deputy confirmed it with binoculars. A 4th Army Ordnance Disposal Team removed it to Ft. Hood where officials said it was a practice air to ground rocket and destroyed. The Army could not determine how long it had been there or how it got on the driftwood pile.
About 160,000 United Auto Workers members walked off Ford plants in 25 states, slowing output to a trickle as only Canada kept limited production. Competitors GM and Chrysler continued operating. UAW allowed two Mount Clemens plants to stay open to supply GM and Chrysler components.
Ernest Hagee a Santa Fe Railway electrician found a money bag marked City of Amarillo Water Department on a grade crossing near the Western Stockyards. The bag held about 41000 dollars mostly in checks with 2900 in cash after a bolt may have opened a truck door. The Amarillo Armored Service recovered the bag and two honest men praised by Hess aided the finders.
Dallas physicist George Crawford appeals for the return of six computer tapes worth 190000 for SMU data stored at the university. He notes the tapes contain nuclear physics and space flight data from an 18 tape set prepared for the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston and offers a 150 reward. The tapes are non classified and duplicated data would take years to reproduce.
Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara ordered a barbed wire and electronic barrier across South Vietnam to curb infiltration from the North. Experts call it an early warning system that may slow crossings. McNamara used the briefing to launch the 1968 presidential campaign and criticized Governor George Romney over war information.
U S Marines faced a 4000 strong North Vietnamese Viet Cong force and drove them into the hills near Tam Ky, 13 miles northwest of the provincial capital. In a 20 hour battle 376 Reds were killed while Marines suffered 114 dead and 283 wounded. The clash continued amid tear gas and a pursuit to prevent a major Communist push.
