A San Bruno suburb case shows residents funding six new classrooms privately after bond limits blocked public debt. Citizens formed a committee and aimed to raise $100,000 for two schools, resisting federal aid and planners’ interference.

A U S unit of 1,884 paratroopers from the 1st Battle Group of the 327th Infantry of the West Airborne Division will fly to NATO war games in Europe this weekend. About 130 fighter planes and 100 transports accompany the group to Turkey and the region near Russia for exercise from Sept. 15 to 25. The move is not linked to the Berlin crisis. troops will return after games.
Mayor Robert F. Wagner defeated Carmine DeSapio in a Democratic primary, ending DeSapio’s Tammany leadership bid. Arthur Levitt conceded early, while Wagner’s win positions him as a leading candidate for governor and strengthens Lefkowitz’s Republican challenge with Gov. Rockefeller backing.

He connected on a 1-0 pitch off Dick Stigman of Cleveland in the third inning becoming the fifth player to hit 55 in a season. Hereford Texas Rep W R Poage announced the House Agriculture Committee passed a resolution backing new sugar beet growing areas. The measure urges allocations to new mills to support domestic sugar production as a revised sugar act nears passage in 1962. Amarillo area reservists face little impact from Army advisory on four National Guard divisions and 475 units. No units of the 49th Armored Division are in Amarillo, while Fort Worth Dallas Abilene Ellington Wichita Falls and Galveston units are listed high priority. The plan calls for 52 000 ready reservists to boost high priority units, with 12 000 to be assigned to units.
