UN and US forces reported the five day Korean front offensive by 80 000 Reds halted within sight of Taegu as counterattacks pressed a hill position seven miles north. First Cavalry reg pressed toward the hilltop while UN forces claimed Yongchon and Kyongju held despite seesaw fighting.
A Pennsylvanian reef is reported in Oldham County Panhandle west of Amarillo based on Joe Kelly No. 1 Howard wildcat samples. Paleontologist R. V. Hollingsworth identifies reef lime with porosity from depths 6,140 to 6,268 feet, near Wolfcamp dolomite, with potential for oil if Cisco or Canyon reef is productive.
Fort Worth and Denver seeks permission to abandon the Lubbock to Childress branch citing ongoing losses since 1946. Lubbock Plainview and other towns oppose the move as testimony at a Railroad Commission hearing notes steep declines in passenger revenue and rising costs. A Plainview hearing is scheduled for tomorrow.
In Berlin on September 7, Communist forces began demolishing the war ruined Imperial Castle to clear space for a Moscow style Red Square. The dismantling follows urban renewal plans including new concrete works and public squares.
Tickets for the Amarillo Dog Show go on sale at Cresney Drug Store located at Sixth and Pork. Mrs. Frank Floyd and Mrs. J. C. Shires oversee the booth. The show opens Sunday morning at the Fair Park Pavilion with 50 cent admission and free entry for children under 12 with an adult.
The hospital board discussed a possible rate increase due to higher costs for medical supplies up 12 percent, food up 4 percent, and bed linens up 20 percent since July. August expenses reached 61 153.03 with receipts near average, leaving a small book gain.
The Tri-State Fair Queen contest will judge candidates on beauty, intelligence, accomplishments, manners, and poise. A panel interviews competitors September 15 at the Herring Hotel with final judging on stage that evening. The winner receives 150 in Amarillo store credit and a trip to Kansas City in October. Entries due by September 14.

J Edgar Hoover testified to senators that many are native born and that the decision to arrest them would rest with the Justice Department. Senate debates on anti subversive legislation continued with passage likely next week.
Annabelle Simmons, 19, a former Dallas bookkeeper, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for defrauding a Dallas bank where she worked.
Raseo of the Amarillo Daily News travels to Korea as a war correspondent. David Reasco, regional director, is also aboard to augment reports from leased wires. Raseo, a Northwestern University graduate and native Amarillo, will file dispatches from the front under six month accreditation with renewal possible.
Amarillo chamber hosts a local aviation event with a noon meeting at Herring Hotel and a 2209 Taylor address session. Attendees include civic leaders and business groups, aiming to discuss community development and allied services.
