Andy Gromyko of the Russian Red Sox falters in San Francisco as the bullpen sits idle in Moscow. The piece jokes he may be sent to the Siberian Wolfhounds after the road trip. Promoters in Moscow plan more exhibitions despite poor reception in Korea and elsewhere.
The Amarillo column notes Mayor Klein will fish with Harry Daily Roy Cloninger Lon Watson Victor Shango Dr. Dick Garre and Tete Pearson of Lubbock. Klein jokes he’ll read and rest, while others joke about books before packing.
Today in Amarillo events include the District Seminar by the Women’s Society of Christian Service at San Jacinto Methodist Church at noon. Other noon gatherings are the Family and Child Care Division meeting at the Community Council in Legion Hall, the American Business Club at the Herring Hotel, and the Amarillo Exchange Club also at the Herring Hotel. A Western Dance sponsored by Kappa Sigma at Park ends with a Wiener roast at Thompson Park at 9 pm. The City Championship Putting Tournament is at Sunset Golf Course at 2 pm, followed by the Gold Sox versus Lubbock Hubbers final baseball game at Gold Sox Field at 8:15 pm. Danix hosts a Young Adult Social Club at the Youth Center.
US Eighth Army reports two Allied outposts in western Korea surrounded at dawn by Chinese Red forces but they broke free before noon. An American company fought out of a Red tank trap near Seoul after an 18 hour battle and a patrol base northwest of Chorwon faced enemy attacks with heavy artillery and smoke.
Gen. Ridgway rejects Kaesong as a suitable place for armistice talks and says the city lies in Communist territory. Heavy fighting on the western front erupts 25 miles east of Kaesong as negotiations reach a critical stage.
At the Japanese peace conference in San Francisco on September 6, 19 delegations spoke with only Czechoslovakia’s Gertrude Sekaninova opposing the soft treaty draft backed by the United States and Britain. Gromyko had dominated yesterday’s remarks, while others offered mild reservations. Poland was to speak later, with prospects of a signing ceremony on Saturday and a U S Japan security pact possibly inked Sunday or Monday. France urged a mutual Pacific defense pact as threats linger.
In a San Francisco broadcast, John Foster Dulles said he assumes Russia will walk out of the Japanese peace treaty conference. He added the State Department advisor doubts they will sign and expect to be spectators at the signing.
The S&G Corporation of Dallas purchased eight downtown lots near Eighth Avenue on Harrison and Tyler streets for more than 750000. Homer Wheeler Amarillo realtor along with attorneys William Q Boyce and Clayton Heare handled negotiations for the deal. The investment firm previously paid 633000 for property near Wichita Falls and praised the city as a growing area for real estate investment.
S&G Corporation quietly purchases multiple blocks near Eighth and Tyler including the T. M. Bruner Building at 708 Tyler for 90000 and the Red Holmes Parking Lot at 800-16 Harrison for 200000. Agreements for Maddox Apartments and Baker Askew Tire Co building also signed. Wheeler and Boyce deny other interests.
Heavy rain and high winds battered Kelton and surrounding Panhandle towns on Thursday. A 4 inch plus deluge flooded Kelton briefly while winds knocked down two power lines and sparked a telephone pole fire. Barn roofs were ripped and crops damaged from a 6 inch cloudburst with hail. Rain extended toward Wheeler and Sunray with scattered showers across Moore County and Amarillo area as a slow rain lingered into night.
Defense Mobilizer Charles E. Wilson announced that military production has reached a steady pace and civilian goods will face tighter restraints. The Defense Production Administration will cut civilian steel, copper and aluminum use from October 1, lowering carbon steel to 58 percent, copper to 54 percent, and aluminum to 46 percent of pre-Korean war levels.
Plumbers and steamfitters who walked off the job at Amarillo Air Force Base may return today though confirmation was unclear. A construction company official cited secondhand union statements about orders to resume work, while a union member said no settlement had been discussed. The walkout arose from a jurisdictional dispute with laborers over unloading a pipe carload.
General Douglas MacArthur warned in Cleveland of a steady drift toward totalitarian rule in the United States. He argued leaders have failed to preserve WWII victory, questioned the United Nations, warned about Japan gaining security within American liberties, and urged vigilance against domestic suppression of personal freedoms.
