Amarillo joins a national Labor Day observance with a city wide day of rest. Public offices and most stores close while the Amarillo Central Labor Union hosts a four mile ranch picnic at Jack Hall's ranch. Z W Smith and W W Finch lead the organizing committee. The event features dancing swimming and speeches with 15 cent admission.
Bi monthly lectures for farmers will be given at the Conway school in Carson county through courtesy of the vocational agriculture department of the Panhandle High school. George P. Grout, former Texas A&M faculty member, will direct the course designed for mature farmers. Lectures will be at night and address Carson county farmers’ problems.
More than 250 public spirited citizens and several state officials meet at the Goodnight ranch near Amarillo to plan saving 245 buffaloes consigned to hunters. They aim to acquire range land for the herd, the largest privately owned, last remnant of the Panhandle herds, with invitations issued by Amarillo Chamber of Commerce.
Elsie Ryals a 15 year old Floydada girl dies in Floydada hospital after a head on crash that killed Jim Hickerson 20 years old near Floydada. The wrecks occurred west of Floydada and near Happy with other injuries reported to Cecil Curtis and family.
Tri-State Fair advance preparations surge toward opening day on September 21 with the association offices moved to the Fair Grounds. Secretary O L Taylor invites contact at 8878 and notes features aimed to make this year’s fair the biggest yet with governors participating on a major day slated for Friday the 25th.
Mrs Maud Tate of Springfield Massachusetts won the women's speed classic at Cleveland in 1931 averaging 187.574 mph to capture the aerial trophy. Mae Haizlip of Ferguson Missouri finished second at 165.22 mph and Jean Shankle of Fort Sill Oklahoma was third at 160 mph. Tate’s pace was about 13 mph slower than the late Speed Holman’s record win.
Amarillo students begin classification day with no classes but enrollment expected to reach about 10 750 this year. Pupils are assigned rooms, issued books and given preliminary instructions before a Tuesday start. Elementary students report at 8 30 A M and new students must have smallpox shots.
New Mexico sees mostly fair conditions in the south with a chance of thunderstorms in the north on Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures remain steady. Arizona forecasts fair weather Monday and Tuesday with little temperature change.
Tri-State Fair officials will conduct all business at the fair grounds beginning Monday morning. The office, moved there from the previous location, will open daily from 7 30 a m to 10 p m. Fair Association staff will assist with concession space for September 21 to 26 and can be reached at phone 8878.
Bishop H A Boaz of the Northwest Texas Methodist Conference spoke at Amarillo churches, with San Jacinto Buchanan and Tenth Avenue joining Polk Street Church for morning and evening services. Special music and a congregational offering aided church debt relief as he preached on the amiable tabernacle from Psalm 84.
William H. Taylor 45 owner of Spring River Campground was shot and killed in Roswell New Mexico in what police call the feud climax. Charles K Harrell 52, Taylor’s confessed killer, is held awaiting a preliminary hearing claiming self defense. The shooting marked the third in Chavey County in the last six weeks. Witnessed by Mrs Young the event led to an immediate inquest.
A September 6 fire swept through Channing, caused by a bonfire in an alley, destroying seven one story frame buildings including the Horn Allen store and post office. Damage tops $190000 as Dumas firemen aided and three buildings survived. The blaze began at 1 30 PM and the town faced a heroic effort to hold the flames.
Kilgore Texas September 6 The East Texas oil field accepts the State Railroad Commission limit of 225 barrels per well daily. Militia collect evidence for violations as martial law peace continues. Brig Gen Jacob F Wolters in Houston for talks with Gov Sterling, expected to return with evacuation orders. Up to 60 men stay, 709 will return to civilian life.
Texas lawmakers were urged to convene in an extra session to pass relief measures for cotton farmers as governors in South Carolina Georgia and Arkansas signaled bold moves. Ibra Blackwood and others discussed coordinated action while Louisiana Governor Long pressed for multi state participation to curb the 1932 cotton production ban.
