Aviation readers are invited to Amarillo today as the four day air derby brings pilots to the Municipal Airport for the field dedication. High officials of T A T join in the rollout with a 10 A M program and 11 A M wedding of the first couple as part of ceremonies. Thousands of spectators travel by car from distant points to witness the event and the forecast calls for fair weather.
The first of two aerial weddings occurs at 11 AM in the Travel-Air monoplane Miss Amarillo with E R Phegley and his former wife Glenna Caly berhouse Phegleey remarried aboard. A bridal party and band will provide the ceremony as merchants present gifts and the air derby committee offers $50 to each couple.
Vanguards of the aerial fleets arrived as the Southwest's greatest air derby approaches. Lieut. Robert H. Gray, operations manager for Texas Air Transport, landed from Fort Worth in a Lockheed Vega Express to witness the event. Continued on page 15.
Saturday fair and warmer for Amarillo and vicinity. West Texas mostly cloudy with local thundershowers Saturday. New Mexico unsettled with likely showers north and east portions. Regional observations show below normal pressure east of the Mississippi with Montana high pressure moving southeastward, promoting fair and warmer conditions Saturday.
Six seaplanes passed navigability and seaworthiness tests in Calshot England before the Schneider Cup race. Planes were housed in hangars under guard and undergoed rigid Aero Club inspections as each part was marked to prevent substitution. Demonstrations of flying ability preceded a six hour water test to prove watertightness. The event is a major social occasion with notable English society in attendance. Italian and British entrants plan separate attempts at world speed records on a straight course avoiding race hazards.
Two hundred delegates at the Texas Louisiana and Arkansas division of the American Petroleum Institute end a two day convention in Galveston selecting Midland for next year. A. S. Fields of Dallas national secretary presided. Today’s program included a golf tournament and banquet.
Fox Theaters Corporation announced it has acquired a substantial interest in the Interstate Theater Circuit led by Karl Hoblitzelle of Dallas. The circuit operates Lyric Ritz Trianon in Birmingham Majesties in Little Rock Dallas Fort Worth Houston San Antonio and Palace in Houston. Hoblitzelle carried through negotiations but denied comment on the New York report.
Reports indicate oil discoveries about 60 miles west of Lubbock with Continental Oil Co drilling in Lea County area near Lehman Cochran county. A test well at 4 850 feet depth shows about 100 barrels per day and could spur a regional boom similar to Amarillo in 1926.
The Chamber of Commerce relocates to the Bivins building at Fifth and Polk and the junior college will occupy the auditorium's east wing. The change, agreed by the chamber and school board, starts immediately with college opening September 16. Monthly rents are set at 300 for the chamber and 275 for auditorium space.
Fort Worth Texas September 6 involves the Roger Vinson divorce trial recessed at noon due to the enforced absence of an attorney. Rev L T Grantham a former Fort Worth Baptist pastor named by Vinson as correspondent in the suit.
City Attorney Ted Henson spent the night at the fire station when an alarm rang at 3 am. He climbed down the pole in a raincoat and boots and helped fight the blaze. He forgot his trousers prompting the chief to consider standardizing firefighting attire.
Snow piled up to 14 inches in Wyoming with blizzard threats from Rock Springs to Pinedale. Casper logged five inches in six hours as towns faced impassable roads, power cuts, and stalled traffic while Cheyenne and Laramie delayed air service. Nebraska and South Dakota reported one to four inches with record early snows at Valentine and Rapid City.
Cleve Foreman is hospitalized with a severe scalp wound after a man struck him with a two foot gas pipe in a local domino parlor. Foreman, 45, of 1100 Buchanan Street, was treated at home amid vomiting episodes. County authorities seek the assailant, who fled after the attack following an earlier argument. Foreman did not know the attacker's name.
The 80 passenger Dornier flying boat, built in Germany and assembled at Philadelphia Naval Aircraft Factory, completed its first test flight on the Delaware River. Captain Miguel Arguyin piloted the craft, which displayed speeds from 110 to 135 mph, carrying 30 people with 967 gallons of oil and 1050 gallons of gasoline.
Oklahoma weekly crop report from the Chicago board of trade says early corn matured with a fair yield while late corn will largely fail due to drought and heat. Most uplands burned beyond recovery. bottom lands fair to poor and still badly needing rain.
Trophies and prizes were unveiled for the air derby main events today and tomorrow. The West Moreland Company trophy tops the 45 mile free for all. The Globe News prize honors the unit sending the most planes. Other awards come from Southwestern Bell, Phillips Petroleum, and E. E. Finklea for various contests. Trophies will be displayed at Municipal Field this afternoon.
The Amarillo Liberal line of the Rock Island opens September 15 linking 21 towns and enabling daily through passenger and freight service between Amarillo and Liberal. A 150-strong party including J E Gorman will ride the first trip organized by the Chamber of Commerce. Stations serving passengers include Mayer Masterson Wilton Greenough Wilhelm Deal Friton Morse Cator Gruver Bernstein Sanford Oil City Stinnett Pringle Hitchland Hardesty Adams Baker. Local schedules push Red Ball freight to St Louis Chicago Kansas City with 64 hour cross routes. A new oil train runs Amarillo Sanford daily.
A civilian search party from El Paso followed a report by rancher Flay Peterson that a tri motor plane in distress flew south from Columbus New Mexico toward Mexico on the night the City of San Francisco vanished. Lindbergh then landed at St Louis en route to aid the search. The missing airliner was traced toward Navajo Arizona as the investigation continued.
Two Associated Press correspondents traveled by automobile to reach the district after night work in Columbus New Mexico on September six as reported by AP.
A. A. Ray died in a Borger soft drink parlor with a man seen with him at the cafe still sought for questioning. Coroner's verdict not released. F. C. Cleveland, proprietor, held while evidence of a struggle is noted from torn hip pocket lining and torn clothing. Ray may be from Pecos County. relatives not located.
Prosecutor outlines Mrs. Lois Pantages zig zag driving and intoxication as she faces second degree murder charges for the fatal automo bile crash that killed Joe Rokumoto. Witness Rokumoto testifies his father died from injuries and Dr Webb cites shock and internal damage. A special session is set for tomorrow due to a holiday.
Henry Worsythe, one of two prisoners accused of killing deputy Rene Westwood, was captured by a posse today as he drifted down the Colorado River on a raft.
Alpine Texas Sept 6 John Merrill aged 16 was killed when his horse fell with him at Fort Davis He was the son of Mr and Mrs Jesse Merrill noted as belongers of the Jeff Davis County pioneer families in the region.
