Gulf hurricane devastates lower Rio Grande Valley and causes massive damage

Twelve dead and about fifty injured as a Gulf hurricane floods a fifty mile square area from Brownsville to San Benito. The storm wrecked citrus crops worth millions, damaged hotels and packing plants, and disrupted roads, rail lines, and communications. Relief trains and federal and state officials moved to aid the stricken valley.

Cuban Junta Seizes Power After Bloodless Coup In Havana

Provisional President Carlos Manuel de Cespedes and his cabinet resigned en masse as a revolutionary junta assumed control. A five member commission, including Irizarri and Portela, led the new government as U S warships were ordered to Havana to protect American lives and property. The United States ambassador Sumner Welles discussed the change with Cuban leaders before possible intervention.

Texas Railroad Commission Orders Oil Pipeline Rate Cuts

The Texas Railroad Commission reduced oil pipeline transportation charges effective December 1. East Texas rates drop from 30 to 22.5 cents, West Texas from 52 to 37.5 cents, South Texas adjustments vary to Beaumont and Houston. Estimated shipper savings reach about 30 million dollars. Damage allowance to be cut by 33 1/3 percent. Loss allowance remains at 2 percent.

Vega Girl Killed by Airplane Tragedy in Vega

Special to The News reports eight year old Izeta Turpen of Vega was killed when a low flying airplane struck her and her playmate Jo Ann Scott as they rode a horse. The plane piloted by Shelby Kritser of Amarillo crashed after engine trouble during a refueling stop en route from Tucumcari to Amarillo. The horse was knocked down and critical injuries followed.

Ford raises workers pay at Ford Motor Co plant

Detroit reports an unofficial move to raise wages at the Ford Motor Co plant. Many workers earning four dollars a day are now viewed to receive about four eighty daily. The plan appears part of a broader factory wage increase ahead of production shifts. Official comment is unavailable as Edsel Ford returns from vacation and Henry Ford remains unquoted.

Trains Crash Kills 23, Wounds 100 in Erie Collision

A Chicago to New York Erie passenger train was rammed from the rear by a freight engine near Binghamton New York. Twenty three dead and more than 100 injured as rescuers recovered mangled bodies and guard units aided at the scene. The engineer said he did not see the red signal and jammed brakes before impact.

Fort Worth Couple Die in Double Shooting

Mrs. Abba Webb aged 62 died in a Fort Worth hospital after a gunman wounded her and her estranged husband W. N. Webb 64 at the Fooshall home. A pistol lay beside Webb. The tragedy occurred at the residence of their daughter and son in law, Mr and Mrs C E Fooshall.

Tragic shooting spree leaves girl and mother wounded

Bob Baker a 38 year old World War veteran believed deranged shot his niece Beth Baker injuring her seriously and wounded her mother Mrs Carl Baker before being beaten unconscious by his brother Carl and dying within half an hour The 13 year old victim and her mother were hospitalized in Tulsa with Beth showing little chance of recovery An inquest was opened by County Attorney Roy Couts er of Castro County as state ments from the two victims were awaited.

Vermont Votes For Prohibition Repeal In Statewide Result

Vermont becomes the 25th state to back ratification of the 21st Amendment, moving to repeal the 18th. Montpelier and several counties swing in favor with city tallies showing strong support and four teen delegates elected for a convention later this month.

Knife Wounds Put Man in Hospital and Suspect Arrested

E. B. Campbell of 207 Cleveland Street was found with four knife wounds to his right side and taken by ambulance to Northwest Texas Hospital where he rested well hours later. Kelly Rhine was arrested nearby and charged with assault with intent to murder after the butcher knife attack near Fifth and Arthur Street.

Texans Die In Altus Car Crash Near Cisco and Clarendon

Two Texans are dead and two are injured when automobiles collided near Altus. Killed were Dr. John W. Tyndall president of Randolph College for Girls Cisco and Dewey Davenport of Clarendon. Injured were H. H. Tompkins of Fort Worth and Paul McDonald of Clarendon.

A severe gale center wrecks structures in Brownsville and Harlingen causing extensive damage and disruption across the area. Local authorities assess damage and mobilize emergency crews to clear debris.

Devastation Follows Rio Grande Valley Hurricane

Dr. Robert Wright testified at the Lamson murder trial that David A Lamson and Allene played bridge and appeared normal the night before her death, when her head was crushed. Wright and his wife corroborated the account, noting Dave was attentive and courteous.

Governor Requests US Army Relief for Rio Grande Storm Areas

Governor Miriam A Ferguson obtained emergency relief from the US Army to aid the storm torn Rio Grande Valley. Army surgeons nurses and medical and food supplies will travel by a special train with 150 regular soldiers. Rangers patrols and highway guards join to secure and aid Cameron Hidalgo and Willacy counties amid reports of heavy destruction and possible deaths.
