Babe strengthens to minimal hurricane status, threatening a 150 mile Gulf coast stretch from Vermilion Bay to the Mississippi River. Some 40,000 Louisiana residents flee inland as warnings extend and forecasters expect possible landfall near Labor Day.
Civil Defense warns Grand Isle residents to evacuate as Hurricane Anita’s high tides push water inland. Police tour streets by PA system, road access limited, with 15 000 residents and offshore workers expected to leave Plaquemines Parish. Sandbags line Lake Pontchartrain as Red Cross fields questions.
Investigators cite hundreds of unexplained trips by National Bank of Georgia aircraft in 1975 76 many linked to political activity. A spokesman said two trips to the Democratic National Convention occurred but hundreds remain unaccounted for raising probes by three congressional committees and IRS.
