The Nixon administration asked the Senate to prune individual tax relief in a House reform bill while easing harsher terms for corporations but keeping the proposed oil depletion allowance reduction. The Treasury secretary outlined the administration position in briefings on Capitol Hill.
The American Legion resolution on school disorder held at the Atlanta convention calls for suspending or expelling students who violate disciplinary rules. It also requires forfeiture of any federal or state aid during such suspensions and allows campus authorities to seek law enforcement help when needed. Non students engaged in violent acts should be treated as trespassers and face arrest under criminal law. It affirms free speech rights but upholds university control to remove disruptive individuals.

Four gunmen seized Charles Burke Elbrick in Rio de Janeiro after forcing the driver to stop. They chloroformed him and drove off in a station wagon, leaving notes demanding freedom for 15 political prisoners and asylum for them at embassies. The State Department said Brazil would seek his release as a military government oversees the country.
President Nixon ordered an immediate 75 percent reduction in new federal construction contracts to curb inflation and lower household costs. He urged state and local governments to follow, and urged postponement of nonessential projects by businesses. The move does not affect existing contracts.

Edwin Ramey known as Goose Ramey received the John Campanius Holm award for 46 years of volunteer weather observing. Officials from the U S Weather Bureau presented the honor at his Dimmitt home with Robert Orton, state climatologist, witnessing the ceremony.

U S Department of Agriculture filed charges against American Beet Packers Inc an Omaha Nebraska firm over weight and record keeping rules for cattle including removal of tails after weighing Frank West president said the matter was addressed 18 months ago and a hearing was postponed with no reschedule.
Castro County Grand Jury charged Joyce Kemper with murder in the death of Clais Wayne Bud Kemper after he was struck by a car near the Kemper farm southeast of Nazareth. Judge John T. Boyd set bond at 25 000 as D A Tom Hamilton declined comment on trial plans. The victim died Aug 14 after ambulance arrival at Swisher County Memorial Hospital in Tulsa.
Amarillo officials and 125 attendees debated the regional planning concept at the Amarillo Civic Center. Proponents argue COG offers broad local assistance for 25 Panhandle counties, while opponents warn it creates a new layer of government and risks tax without representation. Mayor J Ernest Stroud urged public input and warned of spending revolts and media bias.
