Amarillo police report the citys 23rd traffic fatality at 1230 am when James M Straigh 39, of the 3325 Tech Training Squadron at Amarillo Air Force Base, was struck on E Amarillo Blvd by Charles T Attardo 23, an air policeman with the 3320th Air Base Group. Attardo said he was driving east at about 40 mph when the pedestrian stepped into his path, shattering the windshield. Attardo halted the car and notified police. Funeral arrangements will be announced by N S Griggs and Sons.
President Johnson signed a bill declaring it the most significant nursing legislation in U.S. history. It provides 287.6 million dollars in federal aid for a five year nurses training program.

Scores of state and federal officers sealed a 92 square mile Wichita Mountains Reserve area in Lawton Oklahoma to trap three escapees from Columbus jail and capture those who shot U S Deputy Marshal Frank Trujillo and roughed a guard. The fugitives Robert Cox 19 Albert Manley 21 and Vytautas Spirauskas 21 fled Amarillo Texas area after slugging guard L W Crum and shooting Trujillo. Roadblocks set up across the region as authorities from Oklahoma City to Texas join the chase. Crum says he rode shotgun with marshals but carried a gun only when prisoners were dangerous.
In Middlesbrough England AP Tim Maley broke his left leg and had it cast. Back home the child pointed to the wrong leg saying the left leg was fine. A neighbor returned with Tim and his mother to the hospital where the cast on the left was removed and the right leg was cast instead.
