Congress considers a bill raising Civil Service and high level postal worker pay to keep ceiling near Congress salaries. It would lift the top for Civil Service to 22500 now and 24500 by July 1, with Congress at 22500, while discussions resurface about higher rates to 30000 or 35000 next year as costs rise.

UPI reports America's Mariner-2 completed the pivotal midcourse maneuver in space, executing pitch and roll changes to align for a close Venus approach. The craft, 1.49 million miles from Earth at ignition, would miss Venus by about 223,000 miles on its 1.5 million mile path.
Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientists announced the Mariner spacecraft completed a midcourse maneuver at 8:24 p.m. EDT, steering toward a trajectory that would bring it within about 10,000 miles of Venus in early December. They said the craft must reacquire a fix on Earth and the Sun to stabilize communications, with several days needed to fully confirm the maneuver's success.

Ice Capades box office hours have been extended as demand grows. The United States acknowledged a U2 may have unintentionally flown over Soviet territory last Thursday amid a Russian protest. The note sent to Moscow said precautions to prevent such incidents are under review, not an apology. Washington launched a worldwide checkup after Moscow’s claim of a nine minute overflight of southern Sakhalin.
Bailey County Attorney Karl Lovelady 48 of Muleshoe faces one felony and two misdemeanor counts for worthless checks and embezzlement. A Bailey County grand jury requested his ouster. Bond set at 3500. Court term begins Sept 24 with trial planned in the fall.

Forty injured in related crashes. fifteen deaths occurred in a single rear collision west of Panhandle on U S Highway 60. All victims were from Amarillo.
