Police charged Dunaway with simple assault and disorderly conduct.
A large blaze from a Clovis business caused a thick column of black smoke rising hundreds of feet for over an hour. Ten employees escaped uninjured. Three new cars in the showroom and five in the service department were destroyed. The interior of the concrete block was heavily damaged.
Three dangerous fugitives shot a deputy U S Marshal and beat a guard during an escape from a federal reformatory. The car fled along U S 66 toward eastern Oklahoma and Texas Panhandle with the guards injured in Elk City. Deputy Marshal J Frank Trujillo was wounded in the stomach and underwent surgery in Oklahoma City. guard Lee W Crum was treated in OKC for head injuries.
Mrs. John F. Kennedy takes government leased space in New York City to handle mass mail. Bernard L. Boutin announced the four room suite at 400 Park Avenue will be used by Mrs. Kennedy and her staff to read correspondence about the late President. She has received more than one million letters.
Rebel commander Gen Nicolas Olenga warned the United Nations that his forces would shoot at any plane approaching Stanleyville as he kept whites and urged aid agencies to view them as part of an imperial plot. A planned U N humanitarian flight with two doctors and supplies was halted after Olenga said he would not permit the landing. He ordered rebels to shoot any approaching planes.
