Identified as a member of the Giuliano gang, he was arrested at the San Antonio bus station while returning from St. Louis. He had enlisted June 27, completed basic training August 1, and was slated for advancement before leaving without a pass.

The Navy said it investigated reports of unidentified submarines near Alaska after a Nome area contact was detected. Officials noted no visual sighting and said the incident could not be clearly interpreted by underwater gear or radar. The probe found no definite conclusions and no further action planned.
