New York stocks fell the most in 16 years as lenders dropped to lower values and volume surged. The Associated Press 60 stock index slid to 66.30, its lowest since 1945, with 2.9 million shares traded and many issues ending near session lows.
In New York Democrats in Albany backed Sen. James M. Mead to face Gov. Thomas E. Dewey with Republicans poised to nominate Dewey for a new term. The American Labor Party also put Mead for governor and Lehman for Senator, a first for the ALP ahead of the Democrats. Elsewhere Thurmond won South Carolina Democratic primary over McLeod, while Nevada’s race for the Democratic Senate nomination showed a tight contest between Bunker and Carville.
Three psychiatrists described 17 year old University of Chicago student William Heirens as emotionally insensitive and unstable yet capable of defending himself. He is charged with three murders including Suzanne Degnan and 29 burglary and assault counts and will plead in criminal court tomorrow.
