In the first eight months Amarillo issued building permits valued at 31 357 081 dollars, surpassing the same period in 1963. Schools enroll over 33 500 students with 32 083 in public schools and potential late registrations of up to 700 as classes start early.
Top of the Day reports Local 4487 of the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union filed unfair labor practices against Shamrock Gas and Oil Corp. The dispute stems from a strike at the McKee plant on August 9 as noted on page 11. Two hurricanes roved the Atlantic with no land threat. Cleo regained 90 mph winds east of Cape Hatteras and moved away from the U.S. mainland while Dora strengthened to 75 mph winds east of Puerto Rico and was forecast to pass north of the Leeward Islands with gusts 30 to 40 mph. Cleo dissipated as a low pressure system over Virginia after briefly reviving from a final advisory.
Comptroller Robert S. Calvert announced a 1964 general revenue balance of 73 million dollars, the highest since 1949, helped by a 24 million rise in sales tax allocations and a 12 million boost from motor fuel taxes. Auto sales gains and broader auto tax base added 8 million, with auto license fees up 6 million.
Kerry Kimm a 20 year old teller at the Peoples National Bank on First Avenue chased down a grey haired man after he grabbed 1009 dollars from her cage. She caught him a block away and he threw back two bundles before fleeing. About 100 dollars remain missing.
DETROIT API reports the Big Three built 246,295 passenger cars and commercial vehicles in August staying well ahead of the 1963 production pace.
Chicago restaurateurs urged a Justice Department inquiry and reopening of Senate Rackets Committee hearings into arson and bombing attacks in the area. Laurence Buckmaster cited victims including Richard’s of Berwyn in a bid to extend federal action and penalties for targeting businesses.
SGT Alvin C York, famed WWI hero of the Argonne, died at 76 at a Veterans Hospital in Nashville. He had been nearly paralyzed since 1954 and suffered multiple strokes, with his widow Gracie at his side. He will be buried at Wolf Run Cemetery near Pall Mall as tributes note his wartime deeds and the Croix de Guerre.
NASA announced budget driven cuts including dropping the 1966 Mariner Mars mission and two moon survey flights. The agency will replace the Mars mission with a higher promise spacecraft to launch in 1969 using an Atlas Centaur rocket while preserving the goal to land men on the Moon this decade.
More than 335,500 students are enrolled in Amarillo public and parochial schools. Supt. Robert Ashworth reports 32,083 public school students, up 891 from last year but below the 33,000 target. Elementary 18,367, junior high 6,797, and high school 6,919 students. Parochial and Catholic schools show varied enrollments with Trinity Lutheran 269 kindergarten to sixth grade, Amarillo Christian about 275, St. Andrew's Day 106, St. Mary's Academy around 550, and Price College High School roughly 150.
Sen Barry Goldwater flew to Washington to vote against the administrations Medicare program and then returned to launch his campaign for the presidency. He faces a large Johnson lead but cites growing grassroots support nationwide and compares it to his California GOP primary surge against Rockefeller.
The Senate approved Johnson’s Medicare plan by a 49 to 44 roll call in a pivotal moment after long- running battles. Barry Goldwater opposed the measure, arguing it taxes workers and shifts retirement toward charity programs, while five Republicans supported it. Goldwater announces his campaign start in Prescott, Arizona as he attends the vote.
